It's certainly interesting- and the fact it's happening far
away is a nice cosy insulator allowing it to be entertaining
rather than scary...

it's probably one of those crazy swedish nazis. they're so
silly like that, trying to prove their worth in the world by
force through violence. sounds stupid, doesn't it? now you
know how you all sound.

every country is violent, every country has killers, we're
all bad people when it boils down to it. just accept it and
shut up. you're no better than anyone else.

well, i live in reston, virginia, which is within a half
hour of these shootings, so theres nothing "entertaining"
about it.

i think it's just some random person who likes to shoot
people.

not a terrorist and not some sort of government conspiracy
to further their gun control issue

Agreed.

Zaphod: When something is happenning on the other side of
the world, it seems a little "unreal" to you, it's hard to
take it "seriously" (wrong word, but the first that springs
to mind). It's like Jack the Ripper, actually bloody
horrible what he did, but the fact that it happened so long
ago seperates it from your perception of reality and makes
it more entertaining...

its the media which makes it into a real-time soap opera

jesus christ, i haven't swtiched by t.v. off since i watched
OJ scarper 'alseep' down the motoway, just in case i miss
something

Entertaining might be the wrong word. Interesting would be
better I think.
I'm not someone that loves the US or anything crazy like
that. But a psycho running round killin innocents (assuming
they are innocents) is fucked up whether its in Washington
or Bali or Manchester or anywhere.

he'll slip up at some point. its really not funny though, as
one of the shootings happened in the county i live in. try
walking through a parking lot at night without any worry
that you might get picked off. its hard to do when this kind
of thing happens so close to where you live.

innocent.

Yes, I agree, the media have whipped it up (don't they
always)...

Luckypsycho (apt name BTW): Yes, by entertaining I meant
engaging and interesting-you want to stay updated, not, "ha
ha another one got shot..."

Zaphod: What do you make of the tarot cards they keep
finding?

and ceri, i know exactly what you mean. if i see a news
report from bangladesh about a flood that kills 2000 people,
it doesn't affect me at all. its unreal and interesting.
but some people on this board have actually said they enjoy
what this guy is doing, screwing up the police, which i
think is really a fucked up way to look at things.

i think the tarot cards are a lame and dramatic "statement"
that the killer(s) is/are trying to make.

Do you think that easy access to firearms contributes to all
these psychos gunning people down in the US? You can't get
hold of that sort of weapon (legally)here without going
through shitloads of police checks, and having a legitimate
reason for having it. And 'Just incase the English return'
isn't a legitmate reason in my book!

Unfortunately most serialkillers never get caught(heard that
on CNN) :(

I wish the Americans good luck in catching that sorry excuse
for a human being....

lol Marilyn Manson... that shows just how out of touch you
are. that guy hasn't even been "popular" since about 1998,
when his 15 minutes of fame ran out. I blame the sniper
shootings on the ghost of Benny Hill!

yeah, the death card in a tarot deck doesn't even mean
dying in itself. the death card simply represents
rebirth or renewal, the begining of something new.

foxnews.com just reported that the guy who was shot this
morning just died.

i think that in a normal society this would be the final
nail in the NRA's coffin, but i live in the US, so it isn't
normal. obviously he wouldn't have been able to do this
without easy access to weapons.

I think if it was (don't think it is) a govt.
conspiracy, tarot cards would be a nice touch to make it
look like a psycho.

I think it's probably some sort of serial killer. Whether or
not he gets caught depends on how "greedy" he gets- if he
left it for 6 months then resumed for just a couple of days,
he could probably get away with it indefinately. He'll
probbaly keep doing it till he gets caught and then get
commited on grounds of insanity, before becoming a celebrity
and doing the talk show circuit...

if the killer really wanted to express death by leaving
cards behind, he should've used the Ace of Spades.

he's random and he pays attention to the media. it's the
perfect combination.

peronally i hate the mass media. i've taken jounalism
classes, and they teach you to glamorize everything so it is
entertaining. it it's not shark attacks and child
abduction, it's a sniper..... just like the theory that war
is good business. this sniper thing is a great product to
sell to people. it's better than a tv show.

of course i do want the guy to be stopped, but i guarantee
when he is, it will just continue to be a media candy bar.

Bearing in mind that silencers aren't the same as in the
movies. They're generally holes drilled in the barrel. This
stops the gas escaping all at once. The downside is a slower
bullet but you'll still not dodge one Neo style. I can't be
assed to give a more technical description.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-10-22 09:00 [#00412852]

nah, hes using a normal gun, no silencer, as people far away
have heard the gunshots.
a silencer might be a smart move though.

I dont know that this guy fits into the classic serial
killer mould. Most (that I've heard about) usually torture
there victims, and gain pleasure from the ritual of the
killing, which is why it is usually so easy to link the
killings... cos the bodies are all fucked up in the same
way. This guy uses 1 shot, and presumably leaves the scene
as soon as he has taken it. It seems to be alot more about
scaring the shit out of the population than gaining pleasure
from the death of someone. Which would point to a terroist
organisation, or military person IMO
