I'm transfering to a college in Charleston and I am going
to be out walking around the city a lot. Can anyone give a
recomendation on a good portable CD player and really good
headphones to use with it? I'm planning on listening to
Autechre, Amon Tobin, etc.

Jump like hell? No they won't, I have a decent Sony one that
works like a charm, never skipped once, even when I tripped
over a brick once. I got smashed up... the CD didn't miss a
beat.

Don't buy anything too expensive, just something with
anti-skip. And make it Sony... mine is called ESPMax D-E221
or something complex. Not too expensive, but it's been
flawless, and tough. I treat it like shit and it never
fails.

I have a iRiver iMP-350, plays just about everything and
sounds pretty good. Kind of prefer my old Rio 500 though
because it's so small.

make a bunch of tapes before you got

always rock the walkman
never rock discman

I also recommend the Sony Discman (or walkman...whatever
they're called now) line.

They're coming down in price to very low levels in recent
years. You can get a pretty decent player that can handle
mp3 cds and everything w/ ESP for not a lot of $$.

I have the Panasonic Shockwave with the VMSS sound system.
I would get this one cause you get the cool rumbling feature
-- headphones vibrate. but if you're going outside into the
wind, the wind hinders the movement...you won't exactly feel
the vibrations as much as if you're inside. The headphones
lasted about a year / two years. I don't know what goes on
with them. I had the Shockwave VMSS cassette player and the
headphones went out after 1 or 2 years.

Nice sound though. Had no troubles with it otherwise.

Panasonic: you can't go wrong with a panasonic...i've had
two and they've been nothing but problem-free, excellent
pieces of equipment they are.

I have a great panasonic one with a radio, and 40 second
anti-skip protection or whatever... it never ever skips, and
is solid as a rock... the batteries last forever too!!

if you decide you want a cd player with mp3 cd capabilities
you've really got to ask yourself this: are you going to be
listening to alot of mp3 cds, and can you afford the extra
batteries? on my sony one, mp3 cd's, all though they can
hold shit loads of music, take away about 4 or so hours from
the battery life

Most mp3 players come with rechargeable batteries. Screw
cds's. They just get scratched up. I'd rather have an mp3
or minidisc player...

my answer to you is what electro said

sony mini-disc

I've got a component shelf system that allows me to tape cd
to mini-disc.

then I've got a mz-e900 md lp (portable)extremely small.
its never skipped once

I can record 4 albums on to one mini-disc with my component
system.

the portable player comes with two nickel rechargeable
batteries. I can't remember the battery life but this
player has a long life. in fact I've never had it run out
while I've been listening to it. it comes with a plug in
deal that recharges your batteries. thus I will never need
to buy batteries which saves $$$. words cannot express how
happy I'm with it.

also go with the koss ear BUDs style headphones. bass is
deep. minimal noise escapes the headphones so you won't be
bothering anyone near you. the funny thing is that there
cheap to. I've always had good experiences with koss
headphones.

of course if you don't have the money to get a component
system that records cd to md then you'll need to look into a
personal md player that can be linked with a system to
record mds.

I always listen to ae, polygon window, and proem by the way
so go for it.

good luck

I have a Sony CD Walkman and it doesn't jump. I don't even
have to use the anti-skip function. I had one about 5 years
ago but took it back coz it jumped loads. But things have
moved on now and they've got it down.

With Minidisc players you have to tape stuff from CD and
that's a pain in the arse.

I've got a Phillips 303 MP3CD player and it's great...no
skipping, great sound & all a good price as well...around
100 quid (including car kit, mains charger etc..)...Battery
Life is around 10 hrs...

They do a slightly different model for just 50...without the
car kit & extras...

Much prefer this to a MD...

Get a portable MP3 CD player. Really worth it as it
eliminates the problem of carrying other CDs around with
you. As for headphones, sennheiser have some nice internal
"street headphones" for about £20 which are really good for
the price.
