well fuck, titsworth, Ubik (ESPECIALLY ubik):

thanks so much for telling me why i think what i think
after all, if we so much as say that we merely dont like it
as much as his older stuff, it MUST be because we're all
uncultured, unsophisticated idiots who are simply incapable
of appreciating it

thanlk god you're here to tell us how wrong and stupid we
are, and that we dont really appreciate good music
idm is just a stupid trend for us, just like 'alternative
rock' must have been a few years ago
afterall, if ur not into really cool underground hip hop, or

you dont flaunt your knowlege of musical history around
desperately, you must be a misguided idiot swept up in
popular trends
we're just trying to be cool
liking 'idm' makes us feel exclusive and smart
nevermind whether you know anyting about us other than our
opion on this ONE question
this one opinion is all you need to judge us
we dont share your view, we MUST be idiots.
you caught us, damn!

thanks for letting me know, i understand myself so much
better now

no one could possibly merely not like the new album as much
as his older stuff for any legitimate reasons...
thanks for putting me in my place

as you can tell, i have some obvious issues arrogant
elitists who think they know everyone else's problems

just because there are a few people on this board who dont
really know or appreciate anything about music (and im not
saying there aren't) doesn't mean
everyone who happens to share their opinion on ONE matter,
no matter how differently we arrived at that opinion, are
idiots too

yeah your both very smart people, we're very impressed
unfortunately, arrogannce, pretension and eletism tends to
come with the territory

haven't you guys learnt anything from fraiser??

it was (misguided) "arrogant elitists" who i was criticizing
in the first place. people who are idm snobs but only got
into idm a few months ago after years of rock listening. all
i'm saying is "know your place". if you get the references
on DYKS? and still don't like it that's cool. it's not like
this is anywhere near his best album. but if you're an idm
snob without a background in the early years of electronic
music (see modulations or listen to OHM: early gurus of
electronic music) or ignorant/closeminded toward MAINSTREAM
(not "underground", but top 40) hip-hop producers like
neptunes and timbaland, it's hard to really take your
opinion seriously on this album if you lack these reference
points. if you'll notice, i didn't single anyone out. i
don't pretend to know who's who, but certain comments make
me suspicious of whether or not people really know what
they're talking about.

that said, you can like or dislike an album w/o any context
at all. but disliking DYKS? w/o the musical references i
originally mentioned is akin to a rock fan disliking an
autechre album. without certain musical touchstones, they
miss the point.

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2002-10-07 11:25 [#00395335]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

also bear in mind the difference between "idm fans" and "idm
snobs". idm snobs are closeminded to types of music outside
of idm. idm fans are fans of idm.

If you have ears and enjoy music, you can make an
''educated'' judgement on an album no matter WHAT you know
about its background and influences. A truly great album
stands on its own, it doesn't NEED ''reference points''.
This album is stinking up my Winamp ('cept for the first
track).

You like what you like. Can't argue with feelings.

But saying you don't like something, because you think it

although i apparently think much more highly of it than you
do, DYKS? is far from an exceptional album. to think it's
great you really do need to get the references. his albums
that stand on their own are (in my opinion) HND, FMWT, BL,
and to an extent MIRON. i'd say go plastic but my
girlfriend--who loves afx, plaid, lfo, telefon tel aviv,
etc.--hated it and she's listened to it 3 times or so. i'm
not saying that's a lot, but it's not an album that can
click with anyone. you need to get the references for that
one (although unlike DYKS?, those references aren't very
"esoteric".. basically you just need a brief history of
squarepusher, warp, and drill 'n' bass, which my girlfriend
lacked a year ago when she got the album).

you loved anstromm feck 4 when it was an untitled live track
jay! don't front :P

I'll front all I want. :-) I was overly excited when I first
heard it, but even then I usually was pretty disinterested
later in the track.

But I truly do love the first minute and a half! It makes me
bouncy. There's a lot of minute little percussive details in
shit in the first half that float my boat, the rest is too
manic!

I'm actually surprised though... I thought this album would
be pretty straightforward and poppy... track 1 is a
potential number 1 hit! Well, not really, but it's got its
catchy Red Hot Carrish chrams...

My favorite Pusher moments don't involve pure maniacal
chaos, though. And that's all that track becomes. Where's
the gorgeous bass playing of Port Rhombus or the atmospheric
textures of Tundra?

Stuck so far up Tom's pretentious English arse that he can't
use them. :-)

ok, lets face it

people are just getting pissy because they read "Do You Know
Squarepusher?" and they say to themselves "yes, yes i do, i
am a hardcore fan, i know him and love him"

then it comes out, and its not what they expected, so they
are mad and spiteful for being wrong... they dont REALLY
know squarepusher. no one does. squarepusher is the only one
that does...

he is not just the image we create of him in our minds.
