okay... 2 days ago whilst playing Majora's Mask, i noticed that the little controlstick on the controller wasn't moving so easily anymore. I had to use more force, and when i pushed it to the left, it took a couple of seconds before it went back to the standard middle-position.
So i got a screwdriver, and opened up my controller. I found the problem quickly enough... the inside mechanics of the controlstick were covered with filth... hairs and other stuff... like the stuff you find inside your mouse if you clean that out (a computermouse that is).
But what puzzles me is that there was also a mysterious white powder all over it. I have no idea where that could come from... i've been very careful with my nintendo 64, certainly haven't sprinkled it with white powder or anything, and yet it was full of the stuff.
The only thing i could think of was that they were little pieces of plastic, scraped of the (white) controlstick because of all the friction etc. But there was really quite a large amount... the controlstick should have shrunken if so much has worn off.
I just don't understand it :-/ Any ideas? People who've had the same problem?

If i'm not mistaken, that 'white powder' is actually the sweat from your hands. I remember reading this in a N64 magazine a while ago (some punter asked the same thing).

my 64 controller gets this white powder outside the control stick, ive never looked inside though but I know why theres white powder on the outside. its from Using the controller. rubbing the control stick against the other plastic makes the white poweder as far as I know. maybe ill open mine up and see.

hehe, i bought it brand new... so maybe nintendo's "videogames" have just been a cover for all these years... i bet they're the japanese maffia ;-)
I had thought about the option it might actually been put there on purpose to keep friction down... but that doesn't make any sense because the reason i opened it up in the first place was there was too much friction... and now without the powder friction is gone :-)
I figure it's probably sweat and little bits of skin... which is actually rather disgusting when you think about it...

be careful when you open the controller though! There is -as i found out- actually a spring inside the controlstick-mechanics.
I spent 15 minutes crawling on the floor, looking for a little part of joystick that shot away when i opened it :-p

This white powder is most likely anthrax.
I don't care what anybody says, when properly held, the n64 controller is the most comfortable, responsive gamepad ever designed. That little thumb joystick is ingenious.

it IS a good gamepad indeed...
i remember when i first bought it together with mario64, someone asked me "how do you actually control mario in 3d?"... and i couldn't anwser :-p It just goes purely on intuition... i've never had to think about it for a second, and yet i can't really explain how i'm able to make him do what i want on the screen.

Yes, Dr. Mario relies solely on the d-pad.
It's basically Tetris 2 with pills instead of blocks.

ehr... i hope this isn't true :-/ found it through google:
"The main problem with the controller is the lack of durability. As you put the wear and tear on the analog stick, you'll notice a white powder appearing often. It looks like talcum powder but it's actually the stick wearing away. My first controller has aged quite a bit and now the stick has worn down to the point where James Bond's walking seems sluggish when playing with that controller. The stick looks the same but very loose."

yes by all means, buy paper mario! Now! It lasted not nearly long enough... i finished it in about 10 days, but wow... those were some of the 10 best days of my life!
Lots of humour, an entertaining storyline, and surprises around every corner... i can't wait to play it again :-)
I've been wanting to buy kirby64 aswell... the very first Kirby on the game boy is still a classic! I'm curious how he'll translate to the big screen.

yep... i paid 30 euros for it... which is roughly the same amount as $30 i think... and that was on a sale :-s... videogames are way overpriced.
But still... papermario was worth every cent i think :-D Damn i love that game. Especially goombario's sarcastic comment on every character and location in the game!
I've seen kirby for 30 euros as well... i'm still in doubt as to whether i'll buy it... a 2nd hand copy would be better, IF i can find it.
I did manage to get a copy of F-Zero X for 15 euros a while ago... that was a great deal. I'm amazed that they stayed so close to the original F-Zero, and still they added all the ramps and loops etc... extremely playable aswell... wonderful game.

damm 64 contollers, I reckon it's their only weakness, why dont they put a solid analogue stick on their controllers like the PS2?, I don't see any white powder around them,
as for paper mario what a game! I think alot of RPG makers could learn alot from playing that one, more classic nintendo gameplay keeping you glued to the screen as allways

The n64 controllers are the best of all time. I only wish that the stick was less slippery, the controller was a little more solid, as in not hollow and that they had built in rumble packs.
