Yep. Sad isn't it? I watched the new music video of
them..forget which track..but that lead singer guy is lying
down on pavement in the rain...and like colors are going all
over the place...and rainbows! and the song itself just
reeks pop. lets get back to the glory days! EVERYONE IS
TURNING EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those who don't believe me, here's a list artists that
have currently turned to the darkside:

Photek
Daft Punk
Chemical Brothers

I never liked any of the artists listed here. My electronic
intro was Aphex Twin, and all of those guys would just be
taking a step or five backwards from him.

Always seemed like glossy electronica pop to me even when I
knew shit about IDM.

This is a bit silly...my philiosophy is that as long as it
isn't manufactured (in an S Club 7/Britney kind of way) it
is viable. All music has it's place....I am not afraid to
admit I enjoy listening to some bizzare-cheesy robot-poppy
Daft Punk just as much as some Aphex Twin, but obviously for
different reasons.

I think its funny how people say stuff like.... have an open
mind... listen to idm... listen to gabber or glitch.... and
when someone comes out with new release by a somewhat well
known electronic artist... all these (what I like to call)
IDM elitist folk really bash it ... not because its horrible
but because somewhat mainstream (looked down upon because of
its like of dsp tweakage), or that its not "underground". I
like Underworld and photek, chem bros. and daft punk too.
Just like I like gabber, glitch, braindance and early rave
(prodigy, juno reactor), black metal, metal, classic rock,
80's pop, hip hop, industrial, classical, ambient and
funk....... all kinds.. it all has its place really. I am
sure some people think that underworld is complete shit, and
that is totally OK because its their opinion and I respect
that. But I am pretty sure a lot of these IDM elitist folk
hardly ever listen to music outside of the "IDM" genra, and
I think thats sad because people should listen to all styles
of music really. Spice Girls Forever!

off the topic....

I just bought Sasha's Airdrawndagger and Leftfield's Rhythm
and Stealth.

Both of those albums rule!

On Topic:

I agree with Mickey Mouse, it's sad that majority of the
people here bash other styles of electronica. Sure IDM is
the best is most cases, but there are so many other great
sounds.

mustashed(?) father)

ANd they once sold their entire stash for the day to
underworld.

I've never heard their music tho ,is it good?

people liking you? Remember, these people are trying to
make a living. They are not going to deny themselves fans..

everything that IDM heads think is pop is usually not even
so.
I'm like hey basment jaxx = pop
everyone I know says no
I'm like hey daft punk = pop
everyone I know says no
I'm like hey dirty vegas = pop
everyone I know says no
it's odd
I still love that stuff though!

Youre right there, WC - What's wrong with changing your
musical direction if it means more people will buy your
records? Maybe even a few ad agencies will take a shine to
it and Underworld could be advertising healthy fizzy drinks
or sumpthin'

I guess i consider myself an idm / art elitest... i don't
know. i KNOW for a fact underworld could do better than
what they are doing because they did Pearl's girl and born
slippy...rocking tracks.

going pop is loosing steam imo. going pop is like daft punk
loosing their sweet house style of homework to the
commercial radio-playables of discovery. I mean take the
last track? what was that? backstreet boys type singing?
my word! what were they smoking!? photek making house is
just as bad as aphex twin making country music. its just so
bad when artists get lazy i guess. i just REALLY REALLY
hope autechre don't do anything rash and get weak and come
out with something everyone will like. that's it...i'll
leave music altogether if that happens.

Don't be so quick to bash house music....Mike Paradinas and
artists off the deFocus label all use house elements.

i dont liek house music. i cant help it, but i dislike it
coz itshouse nto coz its mainstream.

i still love the chemical brothers, but their new stuff isnt
as funky and energetic as the dig your own hole album.

i never liekd underworld much.

i liek fatboy slim even tho some of his enw stuff is a bit
crap. some of its still ok though imho.

i dont liek the enw prodigy much either, but at east theyre
doing their own thing and not jsut making dance.

PS i do go to raves and listen to dance music and stuff.

Wave band...and their niche in Electronic was bringing
singing pop brand of pop to Elctronica

pop = popular music
by my standards afx is almost pop.
im not saying theres anything wrong with it, i still love
afx, but the fact is that he's fairly popular

like you could ask most kids on the street "have you heard
of the aphex twin?" and they say yes, anbd most of them
would even know his name etc etc....

liek eminem waging war on the pop groups....but he's pop
himself.

to me pop is a cross between a genre and a status

ie you can have techno, then techno pop
and rap and then rap pop
etc...

its funny people bring photek into this... not knowing his
intentions in releasing a tech-house record... his roots
were apparently in the house scene..and he had become
disgusted with the current dnb scene..so he tried to
distance himself from it by returning to house..

and as for underworld going pop..yes they did...like nearly
20 years ago

really..aphex could be called 'pop' too..seeing as he's
about as well known as underworld, and has a similar sized
fan base.. sure his music may not be as 'accessable' ..but
that doesnt make him any less popular...because for every
person who dismisses it as 'weird noise' theres at least two
more who embrace it for the sheer fact the first hates it
...since 'understanding' something others dont always makes
you cooler right?
and dont think that aphex releases albums only for himself,
disregarding his audience..he has said that he keeps many
tracks unreleased because he doesnt think people will like
them
