A friend and I were walking down the road and we saw one of my friend's friends who apparently doesn't like me. My friend and him had some friendly banter for a few moments before we walked on.
That sprung a conversation in which my friend revealed that he's noticed people are naturally inclined to dislike me. He said that a lot of his friends, after meeting me, have said they don't like me. Some say they think I'm an asshole, others think I'm pathetic (which is the case with the instance that triggered this thread).
Looking back on meeting these people, I have only acted in ways that divert attention from myself, or that I thought did so. I acknowledge that I have an odd personality, and that I might not fit in with a lot of people...
One of my friends (of 3) says that I act "defeated", which I think is the truest assessment. I don't know. I've always thought people were naturally inclined to dislike me, but I thought it was mostly paranoia; apparently it wasn't.
I definately need to train more in charisma *mopes*

you some have friends, and they're friends enough to tell you people dislike you and you act defeated. they're honest to you and thats the best sign in a friend.
i'm sure you've heard this before but all you can do is be yourself, if you act different to make friends its not really real and people don't like a pretentious phony.

the instance in which my friend told me people dislike me was a rare moment of honesty on his part. The very fact that he noticed it is amazing, since in order for him to process any sort of observable phenomenon, it has to happen a lot, which tells me this is a greater issue than I may have previously thought.
I do have one good friend though, thankfully.

Yeah, I can somewhat relate to this. I too try not to draw attention to myself, I'm not remotely offensive to anyone, near as I can tell, yet I seem to rub many people the wrong way. I make a bad first impression. Hey, I guess I act and look like a ghoul, what can you do? I don't take it personally. I'm extremely reserved and most people don't want to mingle with people like me (the feeling is of course soooo mutual).
Can't relate to the ''asshole'' thing, though. I think people just get a certain polarizing vibe from me. Why would they think you're an asshole, in your opinion? Smarmy remarks, caustic 'tude, or what?

When people meet me, they think I'm really arrogant, initially. It's not until they get to know me that they realise that I'm actually really shy, which is why I don't really talk to a lot of people if I don't know them.
So I guess I'm in a similar-ish boat to yourself..

doesn't sound too good... = ( but frankly it's really rude of them to say that you're "pathetic" or "an asshole", even if they didn't say it directly to you.
i don't know...
i don't really know either how others perceive me; i think i'm the "quite nice, but not very talkative, nor attractive, nor interesting" kind. i could be wrong.

a night filled with kebabs, stella and masuimi max. sounds good!
and it's good to see monoid in wikipedia too:
Monoid Jump to: navigation, search In abstract algebra, a branch of mathematics, a monoid is an algebraic structure with a single, associative binary operation and an identity element. In other words, it is a unital semigroup.
Contents
1 Definition 2 Examples 3 Properties 4 Monoid homomorphisms 5 Relation to category theory
[edit]
Definition
A monoid is a set M with binary operation * : M × M ? M, obeying the following axioms:
Associativity: for all a, b, c in M, (a*b)*c = a*(b*c) Identity element: there exists an element e in M, such that for all a in M, a*e = e*a = a.
One often sees the additional axiom
Closure: for all a, b in M, a*b is in M though, strictly speaking, this isn't necessary as it is implied by the notion of a binary operation.
Alternatively, a monoid is a semigroup with an identity element.
A monoid satisfies all the axioms of a group with the exception of having inverses. A monoid with inverses is the same thing as a group.
A monoid whose operation is commutative is called a commutative monoid (or, less commonly, an abelian monoid).
[edit]
Examples
Every singleton set {x} gives rise to a one-element (trivial) monoid. For fixed x this monoid is unique, since the monoid axioms require that x*x = x in this case.
Every group is a monoid and every abelian group a commutative monoid.
Every semilattice is an idempotent commutative monoid. Any semigroup S may be turned into a monoid simply by adjoining an element e not in S and defining ee = e and es = s = se for all s ? S.
The natural numbers, N, form a commutative monoid under addition (identity element zero), or multiplication (identity element one).
The elements of any unital ring, with addition or multiplication as the operation.

i avoided this thread until now since i thought it was about monoid.
at xltronic i've been told i should die, that i'm a stupid idiot, a twat, that i'm thought of as an elderly lesbian aunt, and that i should be banned, and only a couple of those were from dog_belch. so i guess you could say i rub some people the wrong way.
you seem like a fine chap to me, scup. what's most important is that you like yourself. if you're not happy with some elements, realize that you're happy with others. some elements can be changed, if you want to change them.

there's this awesome fish dish thingie I make from time to time.. you need 5kgs of large-grained sea salt, one large trout or salmon, lots of goodies to put inside the fish and all the stuff you usually eat with fish.
pour parts of the salt out on one of those plates you put in the oven so that it covers it. put the fish on top (keep head and tail on if possible). put goodies inside fish where the guts used to be. cover fish completely with the rest of the salt (if the head or tail sticks out from the salt it doesn't matter as you're not eating that anyway.. you're just keeping it on to keep goodness inside). put it in the oven (around 200 degrees celsius) until the salt is a hard shell and the fish is ready (when the meat "lets go" of the bone.. just chop a small hole near the spine of the fish and check.. it shouldn't take more than an hour or so).
when it's finished, chop up the salt and eat the fish!
