looks like AOL is abandoning development of the mozilla project & netscape. as well as letting a bunch of developers go. many people hated what netscape had become, but, there was really some good work being done with mozilla.
it says the mozilla project will continue. but, i have my doubts. i hope it does, because firebird/phoenix is the best darned browser this side of the missisip.
there's changes to the mozilla site that happend today as well. that may or may not be a good sign for moz.

It already has a good foundation so it can creep along with some bugfixes and maybe trivial new features for a while but eventually it's gonna need a patron. IBM might throw some money at it if they know what's good for them. Maybe even Sun. Possibly also Red Hat and Suse, but I don't know how much they can contribute -

mozilla firebird has a great popup blocker built into it. i haven't seen a single popup ad in six months.
the only time i use IE is to test a page, or to use the google toolbar to check the page rank. you should give firebird a chance, it's nice. once you start using tabbed browsing you'll never go back.

everyone in OpenSourceLand was like, this is super revolutionairy. It is lite, loads fast, has great usability, hooray!
Fuck Micro$oft, you know what, felt like IE to me.
Takes longer to load up, sometimes the pages load faster, sometimes not.
I mean, it's the same old thing beat to a pulp, I don't feel any innovation, and I want my money back (joke).
It's just a knee-jerk reaction to a company that ain't going to relinquish it's monopoly, the least they could have done is made it revolutionary and awesome.
BORING

The good stuff is under the hood! Built in popup blocking and script control so it doesn't flood you with malware and popup ads, fine grained control over cookies and images, tabbed browsing, middle click a link to open in a new tab, mouse gestures to navigate - reload, go back, etc.; choice of Google as a default search engine when you type keywords into the address bar, a fairly decent GUI HTML editor if you go the Mozilla (non-Firebird) route, an email client that won't automatically execute attachments; gives you the choice to download or open an m3u (mp3 playlist) so you can find the url of a streaming file and download it instead of streaming it...
But most importantly, once you get used to using a Mozilla based browser, going back to IE feels like losing control of your computer so thay any website can ream you through the security loophole du jour.

Words of advice - make sure you install the Sun Java plugin, and check around in the preferences to see all the options you can set. Never want to see another popup ad? You won't.
Also make sure you install the mouse gestures here and you may want to set the gestures to use the right mouse button. I find it's less confusing that way.
And stop expecting to be blown away. It doesn't have dancing spinning icons or anything. It just does what it's supposed to do - browse the web efficiently - without annoying the fuck out of you and installing shit like gator.

There is no threat to Mozilla whatsoever. Netscape is well and truly fucked though.

Another way of looking at it is that people can't code for shit, that's why some sites don't display properly in Mozilla.

i like opera, but, it isn't free, and the trial version has that lame ad that takes up so much space.
plus, i know it has a lot of controls/options, and that good, but the menu seems aweful busy and cluttered to me.
from what i can tell firebird offers all of the pluses of opera with none of the drawbacks. that's just like, my opinion though.
