Anyone got this? Know stuff about it?

I am going to install it (Debian), but I am not sure whether
I will have to re-format my external HDD.

Thanks in advance for help.

K, I will check out how to partition my HDD and use Ubuntu.
my friend installed it ages ago and I didn't like it at the
time, because I was satisfied with Windows OS. What a fool I
was...

I have Vista. But it looks like it will do the automatic
partition anyway. Is this correct?

I can't be bothered to install XP, though it is better than
Vista. Do I have to?

no you don't need to switch to xp if you have vista... I
know I wouldn't, myself... only recommended for people who
have neither.

nope, you don't. i have both on my laptop working just fine.
and i used pretty much the same method that freqy's link
shows. only problem i had was freeing up enough space for
the new partition.

If you want to use Debian, but can't figure out how to
partition or in fact use a search engine then don't bother
with Debian!

Stick to Ubuntu. It's quite newby friendly and what not. Of
course compared to Debian it's shit, but hey. With Debian
you need to be a bit more clued up.

That's cool- I will keep in mind compatability issues with
Linux. I don't play many games, so that won't be a problem.

Like you said, Apple's are cool, but expensive. I am not a
graphic designer, so I don't need one. I'v never really
wanted one, not sure why. But I coudln't afford one if I
wanted.

I think overall Linux will be the way to go. Thanks for the
advice. :)

Linux compatibility is coming on in leaps and bounds. It's
really exciting to see the changes. A lot of things are now
automagically detected and configured! In some cases it has
been easier to install hardware than on my XP machine!

As for apple, you can also completely customise your system
and make it very appley like if you want!
example.

I know!

And the best thing is, people do these things for fun and
for others to use for free! I don't feel I would be
overexaggerating in saying that, slowly, Linux is making the
world a much better place. :)

Hi guys, I have burnt the ISO to a CD and am ready to
install Linux.

Just one last thing I need to know.

I have an external HDD with 115GB of stuff on it, which is
of course formatted for Windows. Is there any way of
accessing this HDD when I am using Linux?

Thanks.

yeah, most Linux distros now are able to read and write to
NTFS partitions

it's been able to read and write FAT partitions for years

:)

I'm reading from my NTFS partition as I type this. It's
nice.

The disc definately has the ISO image infortmation on it
now, but it won't work.

I tried to manually make a partition, but access is denied.

What do I know now, please?

CD should be bootable.
Did you burn the ISO as an image or just put it on the CD as
a file?
Load the CD in a computer and if you can only see one .iso
file, then you've done it wrong.
Otherwise,

Set BIOS to boot from CD before hard disk.
put cd in computer
reboot
nice menu appears
press buttons
install happens
reboot
DONE

it's pretty much that easy now.

Feel like installing ubuntu again. I don't know why, my XP
experience has been great since ditching linux :)

For coding ubuntu is awesome, seems to have everything built
in. I don't see the point in dual booting, I'd rather go all
the way on one. Hmmmm.

Maybe Ubuntu with a Virtualized XP ? I still got some
windows apps I like using on a regular basis.
