bingob, don't fret if an English-speaker criticises your
English usage when they stick apostrophes onto plurals.

ihvertfall konge!

Can you somehow clarify the correct usage of those
apostrophes? We don't use it in Norwegian, and I just go by
gut feeling when applying them in English...

Its = belonging to "it"
It's = It is
John's = Belonging to John
(all the) Johns = Several people called John
(my) fiancée's = belonging to my fiancée
(my) fiancées = my several fiancées

?

An apostrophe is never used in a plural; e.g. the plural of
DVD (D.V.D.) is DVDs (D.V.D.s). Traditionally, a full-stop
is used after each capitalised letter in acronyms, but it's
rarely the case these days. If you read Hemingway (in
English), you'll see that he still adhered to the rule.

The possessive of it is its, you're correct
there, and it's another very common error; it used to be
more common than adding an apostrophe to a plural, which has
become endemic... even supermarkets apostrophise plurals, so
I imagine it's some kind of death knell for our language.

Yes. On a good hi-fi system (proper hi-fi, not some wanky
£1000 thing), CD sounds like it's being played through a
band pass filter, unlike well-mastered vinyl which PWNs,
hard.

I'm touched that you used full-stops; they look ever so
slinky.

The funny thing about that is that it is indeed the vinyl
that is being played through a filter, or rather, EQ, as the
vinyl can't have too heavy bass; it would skip if the bass
was too pronounced.

You already knew that, I just pointed it out to refresh the
obvious amusement this would cause when paired with your
statement.

I know. I've read the "proofs" that CD is technically
superior. That doesn't change my experiences of listening to
vinyl and CD (back to back) on a really high end system. The
vinyl just sounded like it had a vastly wider range of EQ,
as well as being "smoother" and less stepped on fades, etc.
Technically better doesn't always sound best (something a
lot of hi-fi bods seem to overlook). HD25 cans sound much
worse (as in, it's a less pleasurable listening experience)
than brandless £2 in ear headphones on my laptop's
soundcard, because it exposes all the weakness of the
sooundcard. Whereas the latter makes it sound less digital.

CD's are 44,100 samples per second
Vinyl, like tape, is real time - not peppered with holes or
shotgunned with silence
True you get lots of residue from the diamond on the wax or
the magnetised iron filings (which i personally like)
but try DJ'ing somewhere loud and clear. If you have vinyl
you will be louder and punchier than the others
it is more tangeable and more fun but you need lots of space
and money and patience which will come with age, by that
time all the pressing plants will have closed ha!
before long there will be no more electricity and world wide
anarchy and we will travel for miles to drink ale together
and listen to lutes and trumpets like the good old days of
King John when I was a boy

yeah + 1 on the silence thing with cds, you cannot hear it
but i'm almost sure you can feel it ; i mean my ears are
fucked up & the problem i have with cds with my big senn
headphones is that i suffer from that "shotgunned with
silence" syndrome when played loud. while with vinyls i can
enjoy my doom metal records at a total irresponsible sound
level without any damage.

i'm less sure about those middle ages futures days...

Ah, that wasn't what I meant...

CD isn't technical superior because vinyl needs EQ: The
vinyl is MADE to get EQ'd, so it basically doesn't matter..
I was just referring to the "CD sounds like it's being
played through a
band pass filter" part of your post.

Thanks to the Internet and MP3 I have heard a hell of a lot
of music that I'd never pay for in a billion gazillion
years
, who's going to pay me for that time lost?

Conservative linguistic nitpicking and vinyl-talk; did you
create this thread only to annoy me?
