I don't take anything here to heart, and it's not as if I'll
go a cry in a corner about something someone said, but it
does make this site a lot less appealing to me and others if
I have to deal with so much crap just to talk about music.

The trouble with people is they never take responsibility
for what happens, it's always other people's fault "Oh I
posted some crap and people jumped on me about it", maybe it
was rubbish, maybe it deserved ridicule. Maybe it
would've been better to take 2 seconds to use the search
feature to see if something's been discussed to death
already. Maybe your spam was derivative shite and wasted the
time of however took a moment to listen to it. Why does
everyone want to be treated with kid gloves? You talk of
people not acting the same in the real world, you go out in
the real world and talk complete bollocks to some stranger,
all half incoherent and rambling, see what response you get
there. The same as here, "Fuck off out of it, you freak".
There.

For clarity, I meant your comment about TCH was a fair
comment. Not calling you, "a stupid faggot, with a gay taste
in music".

I don't know whether or not that changes your taking it on
the chin.

hanal: we love you too.

Funkmaster: It seems it's not specific to zilty. I only post
here and on motorcycling boards (where there tends to be a
lot less dickishness, because the members generally meet up
IRL a lot more- tends to encourage civility) so don't really
have an overview of the rest of the web. My girlfriend,
however, has to sign up to a lot of mbs to ask questions on
various topics as part of her job and she reports that in
the vast majority of places, there will be several people
who post not just stupid/irrelevant, but downright
unpleasent responses.

Her theory is that the people doing it, are passive
aggressives who shirk from confrontation in real life, but
who love to come across as edgey with a tough streak online.
I tend to agree.

I agree with that. It's so easy to act the asshole to people
over the internet because there are a lot less
repurcussions.

There are always people on message boards who act like
idiots and all that, but that seems a lot more prevalent
here.

IDM fans are weirdos, I think that's what it comes down to.
It's a counter-culture kind of scene with a lot of
''artfags'' and headcases. I guess, I mean I can't think of
any other explanation. It seems a fair observation to me
though.

I was thinking maybe our very lax moderation had something
to do with it, since the most ''civil'' boards I post on are
very strict and if you swear or flame, you're gone. But
ther'es so many exceptions I've observed, equally lax boards
that aren't as nearly populated with as many hooligans or
smarminess. Then there's a hockey board I post on that's as
strict as can be but people find ways to be as cruel and
confrontational as possible anyway. I guess it has more to
do with the ''scene'' and topic than anything else. The more
niche and ''hardcore'' a scene is, the more caustic they
feel they can/need to be. Add in that this board gives you
carte blanche to start basically any kind of topic and make
any kind of post...

Not that I'm complaining or anything. I mean, that's
precisely why I stayed here in the first place, the
decadence and collective snarl of the populous. And that was
in 2001, so, no, I would say it hasn't changed much at all.
Maybe it got 1% meaner.

That just really depends on what kind of fish you like.
That's what soups are all about.. they aren't really a
dinner (how often do you hear "oh, I'm full up; no more soup
for me?"), but you can make it out of just about anything
you feel like.

At the moment you realise you love the belch you know it can
only go downhill.

Personally, I'm starting to think that the moment when
threads about the bad state of the board pop-up, coincide
with the boards peaks. Apart from the moaning about the
current state, all is pretty good. Boring in a good way,
that is.
Actually, I'm not really bothered.

i felt like this place was doing great, really. the only
nasty thing is those conspicious (how do you spell a monster
like that?) members popping up, and its no wonder they get a
lot of fucks and nasties when inquiring about 'ur fave apex
twins trax lol', they're so phoney its not even funny. also;
funkmaster is a right knob with his redrum bashing antics,
and i'm a knob for reacting, but that's not to say the
entire board is uncivilized. imhoteps.

a case of sillyness, this thread.

One thing that's changed on the board for the positive is
that more members are posting their own music. I've been
here for ~4 years and that has only just recently become
really regular, the [spam] threads and etc. I like it.

ok heres how i see it.

electronic music is in a very sorry state at the moment

people become tired and jaded

we have trolls as much as any board

people often misinterpret satire or sarcasm or whatever
because it is damn near impossible to interpret in text

this leads to flame wars and you never know on either side
who is fooling and who is actually genuinely pissed off

this leads to further resentment

the board is established enough that people have made their
allies

the board is hostile to new members

the board has too many dupe accounts and they piss us off so
we are naturally hostile to new members (see above)

we're a bunch of geeky fucks anyway

lets just shut this place down

im sorry for posting my spam on here..

i only come here to talk about music so i guess people don't
see me as a part of the community cause i never engage in
any of the other threads.. which can be said about a lot of
people..

when i come here it's to see others opinions on new or old
albums, i love reading that.. but i dont have time to engage
in one liners and (imo) meaningless circlejerk threads..

but as long as there are (imo again) interesting and
meaningful threads (mostly) about music i'll keep coming
back..
i do appreciate none the less that most people on here are
vell versed in music in general, regardless of any off topic
threads..

Indeed. dog_belch called one of his neighbours a cunt the
other week.

Whilst I'm sure that people who are sarcastic and offensive
in real life are no shrinking violets online, I don't think
we can assume that is the case for all who behave this way
on messageboards, let alone the majority of posters who do.

I feel the same way.

I've been here for five years, though I'm mostly a lurker
these days. Part of the reason is a busy life outside of the
internet, but also generally for the same reason as some of
the older members have, as Ceri mentioned.

It could also be that this board has been a "tribute" to
some of the major Warp artists such as Autechre, Aphex Twin,
Squarepusher, and Boards of Canada, though they seem less
active now than they did earlier this decade. In other
words, it seems that the overall theme on which the board is
based has been showing fatigue, and therefore there's less
of a base to support it now than there was a few years
before.

I think demographic factors play into this as well. There's
been a lot of turnover in members who frequent the board.
More than half of the original members who were here five
years ago have gone off elsewhere, and XLT is probably a
thing of the past to them. Then again, this board isn't
really unique in this; plenty of other messageboards
throughout the internet have followed a similar trend I'm
sure.
