I need to see The Third Man, it's probably very great and
kind of European.

MARLOWE

I saw:
Brief Encounter
not too long ago.

It was beautiful.

The Third Man features a supporting role for Trevor
Howard, lead actor in Brief Encounter, you'll be
pleased to know.

Directed by the great Carol Reed, written by the great
Graham Greene, starring the great Orson Welles, Trevor
Howard and great American actor Joseph Cotten, and featuring
a hauntingly awesome zither soundtrack -- what could be
better?

dr.strangelove is one of my top films at the moment. watched
it 3 times in the space of a few months and it just gets
better and better. peter sellers' acting is flawless and the
whole paranoia surrounding communism and 'the bomb' is
hilariously accurate.

at the opposite end of the scale, i watched armageddon at
the weekend. i've never laughed so much at such a shit film
in my life, and how many american flags can they possibly
put into one film?! i did feel slightly homocidal at the
end.

[point/star based ratings are so crass.]

wasn't some crappy remake recently done of Brief Encounter?
did you see hobson's choice?

Aww c'mon Jack - it's just a little harmless fun :P

Btw, I think Dr Strangelove probably represents the zenith
of Sellar's career... although Being There features a great
performance: I'm glad he managed to squeeze in one last
great acting gig before he died.

I've seen the original Hobson's Choice (don't know if you're
referring to a new version or not). Good film, been years
since I watched it, though - was it a David Lean film?

hah, imdb tells us that Lean made his in 1954 so it's the
third 'Hobson's Choice' listed. one was made in 1920 and
another in '31.

Rather than a list of stars that no one will read, I thought
comments would be more useful.

01:: The Godfather
Not seen it, so can't comment.

02:: The Shawshank Redemption
Tremendously overrated. Animal Factory is ten times better
and a great deal more realistic.

03:: The Godfather: Part II
Not seen it, so can't comment.

04:: The Return Of The King
Good film, but standard fantasy fare done well. Hardly
"Great Cinema" and hardly desrving of 4th best film of all
time.

05:: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
Not seen it, so can't comment.

06:: Casablanca
Ages since I saw it and I can hardly remember it, so can't
really comment.

07:: Schindler's List
Pretty good.

08:: Pulp Fiction
Good.

09:: The Empire Strikes Back
Great film.

10:: Seven Samurai
Not seen it, so can't comment.

11:: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Very good. An interesting subject matter worthy of
discussion. Very well executed and no bad acting in it at
all.

12:: Star Wars
Good film, but hardly deserving of 12th place.

13:: Rear Window
Not seen it, so can't comment.

14:: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Good film, but standard fantasy fare done well. Hardly
"Great Cinema" and hardly desrving of 14th best film of all
time.

15:: 12 Angry Men
Not seen it, so can't comment.

16:: Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Good action film. Pretty good all round.

17:: The Usual Suspects
Pretty Good, but Spacey does his only character, as per
usual.

18:: City Of God
Quality. Probably deserves to be a few places higher.

19:: Dr Strangelove
Real quality. Definately deserves to be several places
higher.

20:: Goodfellas
Good, but the characters are a bit too extreme to be really
believeable, it almost seems like mild melodrama.

I'm quite suprised that for someone who considers himself to
be a film lover (even if I'm no knowledgeable buff) hasn't
seen a lot of these. As an aside, thank fuck there was no
entry for the tedious and dated, but forever praised,
Citizen Kane.

01:: The Godfather - I love it!
02:: The Shawshank Redemption - It's absolutely a good
movie, but not #02 material.
03:: The Godfather: Part II - It kind of just ties in with
#1
04:: The Return Of The King - Boring
05:: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly - Definitely one of the
most awesome films of all time!
06:: Casablanca - It's great! That guy who has the leading
role, I can never remember his name, is awesome almost no
matter what he does!
07:: Schindler's List - Quite well-made and sort of.. eh..
"powerful." I was actually moved slightly by that thing
towards the end, but I can't really say that that has
anything to do with the film itself.. it was rather that
thing at the end. Still a good movie, though.
08:: Pulp Fiction - It's kind of hard not to like it, but it
also gets tiresome in a way.. everyone's referring to it and
everyone knows about it and no-one says anything new about
it. It got so big it drowned in itself. In other words, it
was and is a good movie, but there are negative things
attached to it now.
09:: The Empire Strikes Back - I can't really tell the star
wars films apart, and definitely not based on just its
title. I like the movies, but mostly as a whole rather than
as individual movies.
10:: Seven Samurai - AWESOME! I love Toshiru Mifunes
character!
11:: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - It must've been
really boring 'cause I can't even remember a vague outline
of what happened.
12:: Star Wars - The whole thing? I guess it ties in with
the empire strikes back.
13:: Rear Window - Haven't seen, I think. What's it about?
14:: The Fellowship Of The Ring - Ok.
15:: 12 Angry Men - Haven't seen.
16:: Raiders Of The Lost Ark - I regret never having seen
any of the indiana jones movies. I believe they're truly
entertaining, but I haven't seen any yet.
17:: The Usual Suspects - I think I've seen this, but I
don't know...
18:: City Of God - This is great!
19:: Dr Strangelove - True awesomeness!
20:: Goodfellas - It doesn't stand out in my memory in any

Rear Window stars Jimmy Stewart & Grace Kelly, the
film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Jimmy Stewart is a
recuperating magazine photographer, stuck in a cast in an
apartment overlooking an internal square--flanked by other
apartment blocks. Grace Kelly plays his girlfriend.

He becomes quite voyeuristic about his neighbours, and comes
to suspect a young Raymond Burr of murdering his (Burr's)
wife.

It was spoofed in The Simpsons -- the episode where the
family get a pool and Bart breaks his leg, and suspects
Flanders of murdering his (Flanderses) wife.

oh right, I've seen it, or rather maybe only most of it, and

company decided on would be "Window facing the back yard."

don't get me wrong, i like the LOTR movies but I don't think
they belong in the top 20 of all time. i certainly don't
think Shawshank Redemption deserves a number two spot. While
we're looking here, where's A Clockwork Orange? I'd expect
at least two Kubrick films here. Where's Citizen Kane?
Where's BRAZIL, damn it? What benevolent omnipotent mind at

HUMPHREY BOGART, and yes he's great.

Coincidentally I just watched Sabrina, and it was pretty
awesome. There's an incredibly cynical quasi-suicide scene
in it, very surprising for a 1954 film.

Old films are a lot more adventurous than a lot of the
modern generation give them credit for: normally in a much
more subtle way as befits a time not yet poisoned by mass
crass commercialism and sophisticated brainwashing
techniques etc etc etc (Continues on Page 12).

You're right and I know that. I should know better but I
can't help being surprised like an idiot when an old film
doesn't conform to narrow stereotypes.

However, I'm not sure which I like better: mindless
exploitation or having fun within and with the boundaries of
the Hays code?

It was also a heavy influence on Brian de Palma's tongue in
cheek voyeuristic schlocker "Body Double" which is one of my
top 20 films and has a great soundtrack by Pino Donaggio.

Well I think restriction breeds creativity.

Doggers: I don't think I've seen Body Double, but I
know De Palma is accused of being a Hitchcock rip-off
artist: sounds like maybe he was having a little fun with
that reputation?

It's a biopic of Bruce Lee, wherein it's revealed that "the
dragon" actually didn't do his own martial arts; in
actuality, a young Steven Seagal was his... Body Double.
