just got back from the bay area premiere...
Lynch came out and introduced Chris Isaak, who played a couple of songs including one of my personal faves, "Wicked Game."
Then he read a brief poem about spiderwebs of dreams (haha), then started the movie...
It was good... It dosent resonate with me right off the bat like Mullholland Drive did, but I liked it a lot. I'm gonna have to see it again before I actually rank it amongst his other movies.
After the movie he came out and did a fun Q&A (yes, his hands were a'twitter the whole time)... most of the questions were about his use of digital video and the usual "where do you get your ideas" ("we all get ideas."), then he brought Chris Isaak out to do 2 more songs, with Lynch on the maraca, and called it a night.
He said Inland Empire will open pretty much nationwide in the US on feb. 9th.

These beauties, they're like witches in Shakespeare's "MACBETH".
"You will be dreaming. This kind of sleep... Someone familiar will be there..."
AND BAM!

*spoilers*
after some reflection, my favorite scenes are:
1. The lady talking about how she was hypnotized to kill her target with a screwdriver. Lynch's aggresive close ups on the cop's(think he was a cop) face were intense. The lighting in that scene was also an intense shade of turquoise. Very claustraphobic.
2. The scene were the dude spills ketchup all over his white shirt, and the fucked up Carnival posse walks out to meet him, one of them twiriling this red star on a stick, another picking a fight with his carnie friend. This scene was chaos as multiple things were going wrong.
3. The part where Laura Dern's character walks into the theatre and see's parts of her life on the screen, then looks over and sees the guy with the crooked glasses standing in the stairwell. She looks back to the screen and see's the guy standing in the stairwell as part of the movie. This was reminiscent of my favorite Lynch scene of all time, in Fire Walk With Me, when Agent Dale Cooper walks away from a security camera, only to look at the screen and see's himself still standing there.
I need to see this movie again badly.

There is a face in the ketchup spill. I don't remember who's face it was. There is a man hiding behind a tree with a lightbulb in his mouth. Who is this man? On Hollywood Blvd Dern keeps saying there is someone watching. Is it her or us, or someone else entirely? A homeless woman speaks of a prostitute who has a whole in her vagina, then she talks about taking the subway to Pomona. Are we to believe that the subway and the vagina are one in the same, and is this hole a reference to the rabbit hole where the crying girl is lost? Who is this girl, is she Alice? I like the scene when they ask us that. It would be cool if at one of the screenings Dern walked into the theatre at the end of the movie. It would be like watching a movie in a movie in a movie. Silencio....
Warning: the preceding post contains spoilers. :o)

HA! The scene in empty theatre is great, because it has some shots from "viewer in theatre" pov and on the screen in this theatre we see what we have already seen 1 hour ago on the real screen. It was really intense, an exactly PNES, I had a feeling that camera is rolling behind my back! Unbelievable.
*offtopic: the fucking snow came up. shit :/

Inland Empire is old news and these scenes aren't the best, but here they are for the collection. Clips from first half hour maybe.
