i think that the most obnoxious and outspoken people on the internet are probably the most reserved and withdrawn in real life. i'm not saying they're bad people, but fair comment?

it's not really a fair generalization, unless you consider me to be very obnoxious on here, or a lot of other people who are reserved (or obnoxious) both on and offline.
though I see your point, and I think there are people like what you describe

often in life i'm screaming and shouting at people inside my head, because their douchebag ways are infuriating me, yet i just stand there grinning to myself.

and for that I have much respect. I actually think criticism helps people put themselves in a new perspective, assuming they dont get all pissed off and wont take into consideration what the real critique actually was. We constantly get bashed at school for our work and ill admit its tough sometimes to look past the intial insults but it really does help.
and dirty priest thanks for the suggestions I shall definitely give it a go.

I know people online and in real life who are exactly like that. Especially with the whole myspace thing, which seems to unleash the ego within. Fuck that, I don't think i'm so different online than I am in real life. Less inhibited maybe, but thats only because you face less consequences of calling someone a cunt on the internet. Cunts :)

to be fair, i think the majority of people feel like that. i think my internet persona is just a more pathetic fuck up version of myself. i wouldn't say i'm a very outspoken person either in interlols or life. but i do whinge an awful lot.

Hey! thanks for the nice comments, guys. I'm glad to know I'm not just remembered for my occasional half-witted, naivete-fueled diatribes about music or society (that I unfailingly regret five minutes after I post them). Cheers!
There's definitely some good folks on this board. I've much enjoyed my years here and I hope they continue.
As far as real life personality vs. online persona goes, it's a great topic.. That's why I both love and hate the 'Post your Pic' type threads.. they humanize the ambiguous ocean of avatars.. which in many cases is good - but the realization that there's actual human beings on the other end of the board makes me think twice about posting every moody idea that pops into my head. But I think that's probably a good thing... :)

Me and Jonesy used to hate each other on here- at each other's throats all the time. We met up at a gig and we get on really well and are friends in real life now (he lives near me).
I've not met anyone from xltronic in real life that I've not liked (must be about 20 people). There are very few people that I dislike here and I'm sure even they would probably be bearable in real life.
I've never really understood people having a massively different personality online compared to in real life. I imagine insecure people are more mouthy online, safe in the knowledge that they won't have to face the consequences (and perhaps relishing the chance to be the 'tough guy').
I belong to motorcycle forums too and it's refreshing how little aggro/trolling there is there. The vast majority meet up for rides and at least know the forum members who live in their neck of the woods. Consequently, everyone is civil as they know they'd be picking up teeth next time they met up if they weren't. Naturally, you get a few people who give it the big 'un, but invariably, they never come out for rides and consequently rapidly lose credibility, some so much to the point that everyone ignores their posts and they soon piss off.

In each of the people I've met off xltronic you can tell see their online persona very clearly in their physical/spoken mannerisms.
Skink is probably the only one who slightly deviates from this but in a good way...he is the opposite of the usual internet stereotype. He can come across as quite timid and not very self assured on the board but when I've met him in person he is a really open, happy chappy.
I know I wouldn't get on with everyone and I don't think could have many people off here as everyday friends but in general the board is a good bunch.

dont you find the concept of a persona interesting? a few years ago i was such a boozehound, both online and offline. thats all changed. when i run into an old post of mine, they often reflect a lot of tension and illusion.
im still here a lot, almost daily, i just dont say anything. just like in real life. ive become a real listener. i dont really hold my views preciously, ive rarely been entirely correct. its like im almost without ego now, ready to leave for the mountains!

I know what you mean about re-reading your own posts. Some of mine from 5 years ago are very different and as you say, I think it's still an accurate of reflection of me back then, it's just that I've obviously changed since then.
