drunkenmastah: the emotion that's within you - ok - like -
the "uncanny feeling", theres songs that do that for you,
aren't there??

db: ive never had a drug addiction -- and you suck at flame
wars

The radiator lady's song in Eraserhead is pretty uncanny.

The Uncanny Valley is to do with, in terms your fucking
brain might grasp, robots or representations of humans
looking almost but not quite like humans, causing
involuntary revulsion in those that look upon them. Please.
Stop fucking saying uncanny like it means "so fucking
good I wanng go bssh pukka bussh buk buk buk buk buk
bsshsh
"

ok, let's get it straight out

sure, you can make uncanny music, but it'll be in a very
different sense
from the uncanny valley stuff. Uncanny
music would be music in the sense of uncanny that means it
can inspire uneasiness, like in the movies where you have
tension music just before the clowin in it eats a baby

if you were to make uncanny music in the sense of the
uncanny valley, you'd have to make the music appear to the
person listening to it as if there was a dead human body
standing in front of him, talking and acting, and I mean
that in the literal sense; the person would have to SEE a
corpse standing in front of him doing things and speaking to
him as a result of your music. and that just.. well, you'd
have to be really really good at manipulating sound to do
that, maybe even so good that it's impossible for anyone to
be so good.

Cygnus: db: ive never had a drug addiction -- and you
suck at flame wars

http://xltronic.com/mb/92410 from as long ago as last month...

Cygnus: im on this speedy shit that's suposed to not
really be so harsh - definitely has methamphetamines innit
and not the methylphenidate shit-.... ANYWAYS. the shit dont
work anymore! and id been relying on it for a quite a bit to
get myself around ... drugs are terrible!... never become
reliant on them for your entire life. its terrible... NEVER
GET HOOKED ON SPEED. IT'S SHIT

Oh right, no, you don't take drugs then. It's a shame your
brain got fried just sitting looking out the window.

oh that,

i quit that shit as soon as it quit working and i had that
bad experience, luckily soon enough to avoid my brain being
fried, or my friends kicking my ass.. thank you for being
concerned though -- did you mean for me to clarify this to
you or were you trying to hurt my feelings?

drunken mastah: i think it is possible that musicians can do
that -- especially with the technology we have now

I'm sorry Cygnus, I know you don't care, but I'm just having
my sordid version of fun. It's an interesting idea but I
don't think it's applicable to music in any sense
whatsoever. I think you're mixing notions of the sublime
with the uncanny.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2006-11-21 13:49 [#02005712]

well, ok, let's say you create a sound that somehow
stimulates the nerves in your brain so that you perceive a
living dead person talking to you and acting towards you. I
don't think you could call it music, actually, as the thing
perceived wouldn't be the music, but rather the living dead.
At best, you could call it an experience, but that would
probably be way more easily achieved by putting music to one
of those victorian dolls and even then the music would be
something of its own and not the vision of the living dead
person.

Real dolls would fit into my definition of uncanny
valley. Still, the guys who fuck them are desperate enough
not to care.

they fall into my definition of general repulsiveness,
nevermind the uncanny valley.

Their valleys certainly look uncanny, or words to the
labourous pun's effect.

Oh jesus, I thought I'd seen it all, and then I see the half
torso for sale. I don't want to live on the same planet as
the little Ed Geins who'd come home from a hard day of work
and put their dicks in a flat back half torso.

I like the way the ad goes "It's here.. the half torso" as
if there was the market that, yeah, ok, liked the realism of
the Real Doll, but due to budget, or perhaps wanting a
mutilated body to knock one out into, were eagerly waiting
and petitioning for the Half Torso model.

It's not really related, I'm thinking of the fleshlight, but
just this second I remembered that last night I dreamt I was
walking round with anus_presley and he looked like the guy
of the picture doing an "L" loser hand gesture... thing.. in
the post your picture.. thread. I'm here too often.

actually, it's kind of impressive in its upfrontness, if you
will.

it's not as if the "full" version was less of an object.
it's just going "hey this might be a real life wom- oh fuck
it who cares"

There's some kind of law at play in there that the less
anyone wants to know what you look like, and the uglier you
are, the more likely you are to repeatedly post your mug in
there. It's not pretty.

Some of the more detailed character models in modern
video-games really unnerve me. When the models are
photorealistic looking yet have unnatural animations, the
effect can be pretty ghastly.

I'm not entirely sure how to apply it to music, I like stuff
that feels fake or synthetic or whatver. A lot of early
Autechre (like Leteral) sounds a bit awry to me. Probably by
design, but it's still sort of distracting.

YAY! Quite a pyrrhic victory as I've spent the better part
of a working day complaining about the Uncanny Valley and
looking at real dolls and got bugger all done, but, a
victory none the less. YESSSssss!

I'd actually love to have one of those Reall dolls. I'd just
have it lying naked in the corner of my living room. They
are just really expensive.

2 questions:

1) How the is a stuffed animal '60% human'?

2) How can wikipedia have an article on this, then reject
one on BIYC?
