My First Tape Loop

I just use cellotape for my loops, mind I'm using cassettes
here. Have you tried looping the tape around a pole of some
kind? A microphone stand will do.

Cellotape?

Is this just normal clear plastic tape?

Yeah, sticky tape stuff. Parcel tape can work too.

And this is put on with the sticky side in or out?

really it should be on the inside so that you get constant
tape fed to the heads, but on a lot of mine I haven't cared
about that at all. It doesn't really matter unless you're
very picky.

Oh, wait

You put the sticky tape on the inside of the audio tape, all
the way along the tape?

The description on that web-page is kind of ambiguous it
seems.

So it's like

--------------------tape--------------------------
--------------------sticky tape-------------------

and not just tape where you “fuse” the two parts
together?

I don't know if that even makes sense..?

Right, you've got your strip of tape right? You need to
stick it so that it forms a circle/loop. You do this by
simply putting a SMALL STRIP of sticky tape on the inside of
where the TWO ENDS of the tape meet, you don't need to tape
around the inside as this would make the tape heavy and hard
for the machine to play.

Yeah

That was what I thought.

But now I'm confused again.

The tape is just for splicing the tape together so that it
forms a loop, so there's only tape on the “ends.”

But what I was asking was if there was some way to get more
friction from the reels.. the reels rotate, but they don't
have enough friction to get the tape moving. The guide
recommends using something called rubber cement to get
friction, but I haven't come across anything called rubber
cement. I also don't want to do anything permanent to two of
the reels, so I was just wondering if there was some other
way of going about this.

Just try getting the loop tighter/shorter, it should work.

Well, the problem is that there just isn't enough friction
no matter how tight the tape is. Plus, this stuff is old, so
it snaps quite easily.

Very odd. Maybe that rubber cement whatever is would work
then.... have you got some rubber pads you could fix on to
the reels?

Pigster: Yeah, I'm slowly building up a collection of
(fairly long) recordings of the tapes, I'll put them up
somewhere once there's a CD full/80 minutes of them.
