Yeah, it's a great blog. He owns millions of records, I bet
he's grabbed a few future grime classics that'll be
considered "old school" in ten years time.

Ey up priest of filth (or anyone else), do you happen to
know what the first instrumental in that video is? The one
with wiley on? I'm assuming it's east connection but aside
from that i dunno, been trying to find it ever since you
posted the link. So fucking hot.

I'm sorry, i dont know. Its certainly dope! Theres this
other one in that clip (around 2:50) with this brutal 909
snare. Ultra simple, but i love it.

Maybe Roll deep crew?

offline belb from mmmmmmhhhhzzzz!!! on 2006-07-24 03:52 [#01942191]

Yeah that's a big tune too, reminds me of dj mondie's
production, almost nowt there but it's still proper dirt.
You heard anything by benga? More to the dubsteppy end of
things but apparently he's doing some beats for alphman's
album (his brother i think), sounds sick. Check out "all
dance" at his myspace if you can get it working,
won't load here. There's a clip up at alphman.com too.

I think myspace is down at the moment.

But i will try to check it out when its back on.

If you have limewire, try checking out "Skepta:Single"
Brilliant!! A bit more happy vibe here, odd production. I
like it.

offline belb from mmmmmmhhhhzzzz!!! on 2006-07-24 04:21 [#01942197]
Points: 6387 Status: Lurker

Will see what i can find, never really bothered with
limewire much. I know DC++ used to be good for grime but
it's gone downhill lately from what i hear. Skepta's been
doing some good stuff lately though, duppy is a massive
track. Probably my favourite of the last 6 months or so,
actually. Between that and dj spooky - joyride anyway. Or
wiley's verse on the slew dem grime ep. Or one of
blackjack's newer ones. Or something else. Um. Yeh.

offline DirtyPriest from Copenhagen (Denmark) on 2006-07-24 04:30 [#01942198]
Points: 5499 Status: Lurker | Followup to belb: #01942197

But its one of the bad things about grime, a lot of good
stuff i can only find in shit quality, and a lot of times if
you hear something great, its near impossible to find the
track again.

I saw a live show with Kano (And ghetto, i found out later),
and it was the dopest shit i've ever seen. Then later, his
album came out, and NONE of the beats he used in the live
show was on the album, and i thought the abum was very
dissapointing. More straight forward hip-hop than grime.
They do that a lot, i later found out, use other peoples
beats, and spit their own shit over it.... very odd

Yeah, grime has got that kind of "riddim" thing going on, i
mean how many differsion versions of forward or fire hydrant
must there be doing the rounds now? And how many people have
done a verse over the top? It is annoying that they're
mostly shit quality on p2p though, all radio rips and stuff.
But there you go, it's "underground", ha ha.

offline DirtyPriest from Copenhagen (Denmark) on 2006-07-24 05:07 [#01942215]
Points: 5499 Status: Lurker

Yes. I never quite got that whole "riddim" thing. I guess in
that way, its similar to dancehall, but i never got people
who says its musically similar to dancehall. I think they
sound very different.

how good is "dem all shot" (apart from tinchy stryder
sounding like a total mong as usual, but please overlook
this) I didn't even know dj maxximus had his own label but
there you go, supposed to be a new ed dmx 12" out soon too.

I like the track Milanese did with Virus Syndicate 'Dead Man
Walking'

Grime seems like slower rap with faster vocals and a British
accent.

I prefer slowing down DTL so that I dont have the really bad
rappers interrupting my listening pleasure.

Some of the older grime stuff is good though.

Dj Distance is the key.

That's bollox, There is an influence from things like dirty
south hip hop or whatever in the production, but the vocal
style is a mixture of cockney and jamaican most of the time.

Agreed. You can hear a dirty south/crunk quality to the
drums in particular (gunshot-like claps, machine gun snares,
etc.), but the vocals are very different to the USA style.

offline Babaouo from Dolce (Monaco) on 2006-09-16 19:20 [#01972282]

so its a reguritation of rap but with a british accent.

ok I see the difference.

It's not just the accent; it's the clipped, stop-starting
rhythm of it and the fact that even though a lot of it's
very quick, it sounds nothing like USA speed rappers.

offline Babaouo from Dolce (Monaco) on 2006-09-16 19:32 [#01972287]
Points: 787 Status: Regular

and your saying it's not the accent?

hmm. If I said it was the dialect would that sway you?

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2006-09-16 20:11 [#01972311]
Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Followup to Babaouo: #01972287 | Show recordbag

Yes, the dialect is different too (as swears says, more
generally more Jamaican vocabulary than in your typical
american track). I'd still argue that the rhythm/percussive
qualities of the lyrics are different and that these are not
directly related to either the accent or dialect.

I don't disagree that UK hip hop used to be just a poor
imitation of the american scene several years earlier. I
just think that since the popularity of grime, a distinct
seperate style has emerged that is no longer just a clone of
American acts. A lot of acts seek to distance themselves
from the Americans and take the piss out of them.

offline Babaouo from Dolce (Monaco) on 2006-09-16 21:19 [#01972350]
Points: 787 Status: Regular

I'm just fuckin around, really just dont like the UK ego,
I'd say 85% of the Americans on this board really dont give
much of a shit and it makes the UK seem like it really has
its head up its ass with trying to "take the piss out of"
US. It is a minut problem we face with being American. It's
not that we're American and we own the fucking planet do as
I say or else. It's more like "wow bush should die, you
gonna pull the trigger? nah, although prison does have HBO
it doesnt have the G4 network and I wont be able to go on
Xboxlive ". we really dont care. the UK ego makes it seem
like Penis envy. I'm sorry it does.

I am also sorry for that rant. no really I am. 100% uncalled
for.
I dont have anything other than respect for you guys btw.
the only people I dont really care for are Aisians and
Indians, Both dot and feather, and that is only because I am
a salesman and even if I drop 1000 dulla off a bed, they
still say " Oh, well I thaught you guys were having a sale"
and Indians (in my area btw not trying to generalize) hit me
up with: " so this is the final price?... yeh ok are you
sure? " and they go on and on coming back and forth till I
drop it all the way past store cost and offer free shit
just to hear them say " well I'll have to think about it" .

oh also: Hiphop/rap and all that really isnt my scene.
My GF listens to it in the car but I am more of a
Industrial, Abbraisive IDM, Dubstep, (very little breakcore)
kind of a guy.

I like distorted vocals and when artists include distorted
scat into the track. I dont like it when the artists take
themselves way too serious.

" taking the piss out of them" isnt bad btw. competition is
good and promotes change. It just comes across as really
negative against US. hahaha I'll stop you guys are probably
just like me and have one or two dozen things you dislike
about what I do or say but deep down we all really dont care
either way.
