I'm not saying you should only make music if you think other people will think it's 'really good', which seems what you are talking about - fuck that. I'm saying it's strange and kind of mindboggling (to me at least) to make music you don't even like yourself.
what would be the point?
you may call that cynical, I call it having some sense of realism.
there is a difference between saying "MY MUSIC IS THE BEST!! FUCK YOU AUTECHER N APHEX!!LOL" and saying "I think the music I make is okay, some times I'm really pleased with what I've done".

I guess youre right. I suppose its all about the context you put your music in. When I started making music Id never heard music like what I was making so I didnt realise how awful it was. If I had started after listening to APHEX N AUTECHER I probably wouldnt have had the willpower to keep making it

You can pick one track from aphex and create a whole genre from it. Use him as inspiration.

you are wrong, qrter. you're a big old wrongy pants because I stopped making music for those aforementioned reasons and you said that would never happen. I was drinking over-chocolatey hot chocolate when I came to the decision.

When I get writer's block, I do one of the following;
1. Get a new sequencer/sample library/synth and learn it. I'll invariably come across something I like and use it as the basis for a track.
2. Make some new synth patches. They always come in handy once you're writing again.
3. Master/Engineer some older tracks. I find doing this is a particularly dry bit of producing anyway, so I'd far rather do it when I'm not able to come up with anything new, rather than waste time I'm feeling creative on it.
4. Change genres; if I've been doing ambient for a week, I start getting board and switch to drum and bass, or techno, etc. "A change is as good as a rest."
5. Focus on a single 16 step loop, either drum or melody and make it as good as you possibly can. I'll sometimes spend 2-3 hours on one till I've got something I'm really happy with. You can then use this as the main beat/melody for a track and coming up with variations around it is easy. Before you'll know it, you have a whole rhythm track/bassline and have half a track done.
Not only does doing the above, in the long run, help me finish tracks/improve my music as much as actually writing new stuff, but the fact that during the time spent on music, I feel I'm achieving something rather than sitting and thinking "damn, this is no good, I'm getting nowhere..." helps me shift the block earlier. Hope one of these helps for you.
