I agree with ophecks...I don't like the term 'IDM' at all
but its just easy and as I said on my survey, everyone knows
what kind of music it is. I find 'electronic' a bit too
vague and if I say that to people they are like 'ohhh, so
paul van dyk and ian van dahl and stuff?'. I often usually
say 'experimental electronic music' but when typing on the
net I say IDM..takes less effort. I find the term
'braindance' even cheesier than IDM and never use that.

But actually, a few people I know thought it was industrial.
And I think the 'dance' should be dropped, I ain't ever
going to try dance to Ziggomatic or Boneville Occident!

i would say is anti-conventional music.

so in a few years idm of today will no longer be idm. it
will evolve into something else..

i'd call it now... reaccionary music (electronic or not)

I call it music. Nothing more, nothing less. I know loads
have people have said this, but we can go on about this for
years and still come out with no conclusion. Just shut up
and listen. (note to self - copyright last sentence)

yeah i'd do that too...

but you can't deny any category contains an escence... and
escences are very important to me... what i'm trying to do
is to put the overall escence of the "IDM" or "braindance"
genre into words.

but yes it is just music.

that would be cool if you could do more with music than
listening, like eating it! a producer would be like a chef

i think that Rephlex's "braindance" was suppossed to be
joke, making fun of the over serious sounding "IDM".
Braindance is supposssed to be silly.

OK, i thought that "alternative" had bagged the definition
of "anti-conventional"? i really hate the word "intelligent"
in IDM - it should cause hatred and loathing among the
rabble! so condescending!

IDM fan: "ha! keep your happy hardcore handbag dance! for i
listen to INTELLIGENT dance music you wench!"
handbagger: "yes sah!"

IDM is a stupid term, but people know what you're talking
about when you use it. IT doesn't really matter what you
call it as long as its something people can identify.

well quite often, people DON'T know what you're talking
about when you use the term IDM
