Yeah, that deserves to be written on a banner ad and run for
a week in Phobia's banner space. Well said.

I think the time has long gone that people who start a label
do so expecting not to lose money in the process.

it more or less is a given that you will be releasing stuff
and losing money, it's a labour of love.

which is why many small labels still run small runs of weird
not very commercial records, I think. because they don't
really expect to sell a lot, if any.

plus the market is flooded...its so cheap to compose music
and so many people have so much free time it's ridiculous

the likelihood of bad music has increased dramatically

music, stop all this jumped out folk bollocks.

ubehag?

It's not so much the quantity of amateur music as the
tendency of IDM messageboard pals to make mediocre music,
"release" it on "netlabels", then have an orgy of dick
sucking about how wonderful it all is.

the likelihood of bad music has increased
dramatically

So has the likelihood of good music.

So has the likelihood of good music.

you have a point fleetmouse

richard devine is the #1 harmonica jammer of all time

plus i thought i was talking about established acts, oh
wait, i was - im talking about people, or releases i dont
like - not bedroom electronica

just because a group made one great album, or fifteen, does
NOT mean their newest one will be any good OR worth buying,
as in the BOC case...

the likelihood of both good and bad music increases as the
volume of music produced increases?

stop the presses, xltronic, we've stumbled onto a "profound
truth."

Yeah - more musicians with more music tools means more music
- both good and bad. You've obviously misinterpreted that as
a higher percentage of both which is of course impossible,
hence your scoffing. But I'm talking about growing the pie
higher!

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2005-10-28 00:27 [#01763467]

mostly: don't even get started cause we're gonna start
slinging shit at 99% of the releases that have come out in
the last few years.

but i guess i just wanted to say that Keith Fullerton
Whitman and Greg Davis don't really qualify as IDM to begin
with. particularly in the case of more recent releases. and
a lot of their stuff is quite good. but i guess if you don't
have more than 10 minutes that's not super obvious. and of
course it's possible that you wouldn't like it anyhow, i'm
not really wanting to judge taste er nothin', words
pertaining to pretension get my blood boiling a bit though,
especially in the case of those dudes cause they are
actually both quite accessible a lot of the time.

The use of the term "hype" in the context of idm is just
ridiculous. Millions of people, men and women, wank over
Paris. Paris Hilton is a hype. Thousand skinny white
guys wanking over the reissue of the HAB's isn't.
In a community consisting of a couple of thousand members,
at most, you've already got a hype when 20 people like an
album. Come on.

Stop using the term "hype" in the context of idm please.
It's just plain ridiculous....and in your head.

Cheers

experimental, found sound scape, etc etc etc blah blah blah

yeah no, you don't have to tell me, i know. these guys are
catering to people like me. i guess to a very slight degree
you could say they really are just making music for their
friends... issues are almost never going to be over 1000
copies (many much less), and they are highly accessible (as
people). i've talked with greg many times, and keith a few
as well. at any rate, their philosophy on music would seem
to be a lot different than yours, and that's fine i guess.

ok, I have to agree 100% with dog_belch and fleetmouse.

As Public Enemy famously said, "Don't beleive the hype."

The best course of action is to discover that a new release
exists, then ignore almost all of what people say about it.
For example "TCH is supposedly like MHTRTC, if you like
MHTRTC then you will probably like TCH". That is a useful
comment for me, but most other comments don't help.

Hype is people's opinions. Make your own opinions in life,
don't let others tell you what to like.....Don't beleive the
hype.

Something doesn't need hype to be dissapointing either.
E.G. Pro Agonist by Exile was not hyped at all. I have a few
of his DNB 12"s and they are good electronic-ish DNB, but
his 'IDM' album I thought was mediocre. So you see, no hype
and still mediocre.

I just wish people would stop being so critical. buying a
bum record is part of life, but is ofset by the 99% of good
records you buy, so you appreciate the good ones all the
more.

you listen to stuff before you buy it, shouldn't be hard to
stay away from crappy releases that way.

"Music isn't about the Quest to find The Ceritfiably
Best
Music, with the internet, music sems to have become some
vast Multiplayer Immersive Adventure, everyone racing to
gather as much as they can.

Music should be a relationship, a flawed one, one with
dips,
high points... music's personal, you grow with an album,
with songs, the more you put in the more you get out. This
kind of spastic grabbing at everything and insta-filtering
just looking for the "hit", that sounds like some crack
addict approach. Appreciate music.
"

this is very true... honestly, i can't even believe you said
this.
