I read the news today oo boy
about a lucky man who made the grade
and though the news was rather sad
well i just had to laugh

The beatles weren't loved by everyone. My mom and dad didn't
like 'm much. My dad thinks it's music for children when he
hears the Beatles.

I dont think pink floyd cant compare to beatles... although
they are great... but a step behind...imho

beatles were fucking innovative... and no one has made music
without taking a look to what the beatles did...

uh.. not really: all their most sucessful releases (dark
side of the moon, wish you were here, the wall) came in the
70's... (73, 75, 79, respectively)

pink floyd were not that well known before dark side..

Laserbeak, of course I don't mean EVERYONE, every single
human being... but fans from every single country, every
religion, fans of every genre and style, all admired and
respected the Beatles. It's not like we're doing with Aphex
here, a small group of weirdos into an artist. The Beatles
transcended everything, maximum influence.

we are getting into a ver subjective territory here...it's
kinda my mistake..I was talking about innovation...keep in
mind that the Beatles had all the resources, studio
equipment, produces and engineers money could buy..while
velvets were equivalent of underground..bedroom musicians we
have doing some of the cutting edge IDM and experimental
music...it's like saying Creed, Linkin Park(plug in any band
with access to top of the line 100+ channel mixing boards
and studios) with say Tortoise..just not not the same is
it..
also wrong of me toname drop velvets cause..their dark scary
and haunting tomes to underbelly of NY is as far as you can
get from the cheery sunny disposition taht exudes from every
Beatles album..it's subgective..I will take Velvets anyday
over Beatles

What... the White Album exudes CHERRINESS?

Have you ever heard Yer Blues, or Julia, or Long Long Long,
or Revolution 9? Helter Skelter? Sexy Sadie? That is NOT a
cheery album...

hmm there was a lot of excellent Pink Floyd full of
experiments and innovation before Dark Side..by the time of
Dark side they had settled into the turgid and languid hyper
balladry

Yeah their best stuff was definitely their earlier
psychedelic stuff, like Piper At The Gates...

yes true...
i suppose thier most innovative (by most measures) period
was late 60s...
most of thier work, and definitly their most
popular/commercially successful... well superband period was
post 1970....

Fuck the underground factor, sometimes I think the VU are
only so revered is BECAUSE they're underground... I can only
IMAGINE the accolades and acclaim if Lou Reed wrote Come
Together. It would be his masterpiece, by far... for Lennon,
'twas just another day at the office.

all over Come Together.

I bet John Lennon could kick Lou Reed's little art-boy ass!
En garde!

one album does not make a band..and they are not universally
popular of the white album, either. As far a the Floyd are
concerned I already mentioned elsewhere what i think of
their post DSOTM stufff..turgid and languid were not
compliments...VU are so revered because Lou Reed is
fantastic poet...they had an innovative lineup of
instruments, the darkness of their tunes was real and not
feigned..
anyway a more accurate comparison would be The Door interms
of popularity, album sales and resources etc..
and Morrison and The Doors kicked Beatles's arse all over
the astroturf and back anyway (hehehe

Ophecks: I think it was a different time in the 60s. There
weren't many bands around so if one band became big in the
media, a very high percentage of musicbuyers became
interested. The same thing happened to Elvis Presley a bit
earlier.

I like Pink Floyd much more that the Beatles, but I'm not
gonna go around saying they are the ecuivilant to Backstreet
Boys! They were fucking amazing.

Pink Floyd > God > Beatles

Elvis can not be compared to the Beatles... don't even
mention him in the same breath.

Weren't many bands around in the 60's... not at all.. the
Beatles, the Stones, VU, The Who, the Doors, Zeppelin (69),
Kinks, Dylan, Floyd, Cream, Hendrix... yeah, all crap bands
if you ask me... the Beatles had NO competition at all. Uh
huh. The Beatles single handedly opened the flood gates for
these amazing bands.

I know turgid and languid were not compliments... they had
their flaws, yeah, but still an amazing band.

The Beatles' dark tunes were NOT feigned... is that what
you're implying? The VU were darker, yeah... good for
them... they had their niche and they did it well, and the
Beatles had THEIRS. Lots of innovative instruments in the
Beatles camp, as well.

no one is denying Beatles sparks of brilliance..just that
it's time to move on..I have about as much time for Beatles
right now as I do for Pink Floyd, ot the Door or the
Velvets..i.e none
there's so much new mind blowing music being created
now..just dont have time to dwell that far in the
past...heck I am not even listening to my collection of
early indusrtial which kicks any 60's bands arse when it
comes to innovation...

Well, considering I'm here on an Aphex Twin board, talking
about all the electronic music I've recently discovered...
I've moved on, don't worry... it's not like I'm stuck in a
time warp, jesus. But I'll love the Beatles till I'm dead,
that's the only band I can think of that I'll love forever.
I'll always have time for great classic bands.

Not meaning to resurrect this topic - well sort of .. but
what about early Zappa - there was some nutty tape
experimentation going on there!!

I mean compare Sgt. Peppers, which i am not saying wasn't
great and pioneering, but compare that to Zappa's "In it for
the Money" - a legitimate piss take (ie. the beatles ok'ed
it) of Sgt. Peppers .. seems a lot more innovative or so ..
ah .. i don't really care .. just wanted to mention Zappa :)
