once again I must correct you. Christianity is the only religion that belives their holy book is an unchangable and factual description of how things work. This way of thinking can only be detrimental to people educated with Christianity in science. Intelligent Design is completely unfounded. these days, most things in the bible are read as "images" or metaphors of how things are.. they attribute this to Gods intention being too elusive for words, and images are worth a thousand words (this also goes for "mental images," as produced through metaphors). They don't take Christ literally when he says "If any man come to me, and hate not his father and mother, his wife and children, his brethren and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple," it is taken rather as a way of saying "do not weigh your love for me against the love you bear those dearest to you." this has been so at least since the days of Voltaire (Treatise on tolerance (from which this particular passage is extracted, as I have never read the bible)). The quote by Christ he's referring to is apparently in Luke 14:25-9 somewhere after the dreaded "compelle intrare" parabel. I'd also like to add that science has proven nothing in the way of dismissing any gods of any kind, as there is no way science could busy itself with the domain of "god" other than by studying the physics that people who believe in any god will insist were created by the very same god. Basically, if you believe in God, he is the cause of everything you see around you. |
