"By that, I'm asking whether your parents had jobs that
were
menial or unskilled or involved labour (plumber, sparky,
driver etc)."

Again, an unclear area: They were both from working class
backgrounds. When I was little, my mum was a nursery nurse,
the very bottom rung of 'teaching', upper lower class, or
lower middle class, depending on your point of view, I
suppose. My dad was a bit more complex: He started training
as a librarian, but by his mid-twenties had had enough of it
and quite to be a bricky in a london building firm. He
stayed at home to look after me as a sprog (couldn't afford
a nursery) and then became a lorry driver, followed by
working at a builder's merchant/diy place.

I suppose it's a funny mix of middle class intellectualism,
combined with working class means, attitudes and a decided
lack of snobbery (despite their intelligence and education,
they never looked down their noses at other people and we
had and still do, have a lot of working class friends).

I have a similar mix, since my mum was a single mother
living in a council flat in an estate bringing up two kids
and then met my step-father who has two degrees, works for
Shell and now brings home probably over 100 grand a year.

There's no getting things past YOU, belchy - that was the
very reason I started this thread.
