"they are all worn out."

I really have no idea what you mean with that.

there's nothing wrong with tapes. just because the
audio-standard shifted to cd doesn't mean much - it says
nothing about the quality of other recording media.

in fact, Sean Booth makes a good point about tapes in the
Pitchfork interview he did earlier this year:

Pitchfork: I know you guys archive to tape-- were you sad
when you heard the news that Quantegy went out of
business?

Booth: Tape is beautiful. I love it. I still record stuff
to cassette even now. We'll put things out [that were done
with tape] and people will say, oh this is brilliant, such
DSP blah blah just because the quality of it is superior and
I think people are unaccustomed to it these days. A lot of
kids don't even know what a cassette sounds like. It's
weird. You can do amazing things with tape, as soon as you
get into using half inch and stuff it's just a laugh
basically, it's really good. It's probably the best format
that was ever made, it's just a shame that they stopped the
development of it as a medium because it could have become
really techno by now. With the way that they are developing
substrates for producing CDs and harddrives-- they could be
making the best tape ever just with what they use for
harddrives. Maybe you could turn a harddrive into a tape
machine, maybe somebody could do it, I'm not sure.

I actually listened to tapes quite a bit this holiday..
there's a tape-deck at the place we were and some old
tapes.. when I listened and set the eq a bit, they sounded
as good as cds of the same stuff! There was some tome waits
which I've heard enough to know what it should sound like,
and the cassette was just as good as the cd!

on that note.. has anyone ever seen "Franks Wild Years?"
It's supposed to be some musical of sorts, isn't it?

yeah I really miss the tape..mixes are easily made on a
dubbel cassete deck..havent done that properly on a pc yet.
I just hate tapes cause they always break and when you want
to listen to a song again you've to rewind..

yes it is supposed to be.

I don't know if it ever really went into production,
though.

that's probably my favourite Tom Waits album.

apparently it was - from allmusic.com:

"In 1986, he appeared in Down By Law and made his
theatrical debut with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in
Frank's Wild Years, a musical play he had written with
Brennan."

I'd like to see that.. I wonder if his musical skills match
his playwriting skills... it's probably one of those things
that were never recorded, though (on visual media).. maybe
he could be convinced to give it one more go?

Cassettes were great back in the days, extremely popular and
cheap. I remember buying half-legal Beatles albums for about
1.3 EUR in 1995/96.

I would've liked to have seen it too. I don't think we ever
will, though. :(

luckily he made it into a record though.

you even made me dig the album up again. "temptation" is one
of the best songs ever written.

agreed! Temptation is amazing! I also like tomorrow I'll be
gone.. managed to teach myself all the lyrics of that one
once upon a time, but now all I can remember is "tonight
I'll move the mountain"

There have been several tours of Tom's productions; The
Black Rider, Alice, maybe even Blood Money. I think I read
that Alice was in the theatre years before the album came
out.
