Yeah... a lot of their gear looks pretty standard. Untill you look at the circuitbending that has been done to it.

I'd love to know what they were up to. Not because it's Autechre, but because there seemed to be (as you said) very standard machines up there spewing out the most amazing stuff. I guess there is a lot of customization going on.

Ok, just ordered myself a MPC1000. Should be arriving in the next few days. Actually quite excited :D
Plus, new mixer for Christmas to replace my borked one (half the channels are dead)
I'm fairly sure this is the missing link needed to produce what I want before frustration takes over.
Had been using software for midi sequencing but it zaps my ideas so quickly.
Recently I've been pumping out quick loops on the SP303 and then building on that and it's worked quite well.
Of course the 303 sequencing is best described as a toy (albeit a good toy) time for the big boys....MPC... can't wait.
P.S. looking at the unofficial JJOS, so many good reviews. Anyone got it? I think I will. Only $30

I haven't tried the new os, but everybody I've talked to who has is pretty thrilled with it.

So I finally got my MPC1000 lastnight after waiting over a month! I've managed to be more creative with it in a few hours than the last few weeks with the computer.
so much fun to use as well. It's perfect for me. I'm so happy with it. The only thing is some people have had problems with the pads deteriorating after a while, hopefully it won't be me as well.
I'm gunna go and play on it now, but will probably get the JJOS in a few days, so if anyone wants a review watch this thread!

Yeah, they are great fun. I still haven't wanted to get into JJ yet. I am so accustomed to the proprietary os, I haven't felt too compelled.
And with that, its back to warcraft.

was wondering if all you other mpc1000 users want to share tips and methods of working with the mpc1k, im yet to really discover all its potential but would especially like to know how you build up your loops and sequences.
the problem im having is with saving sequences iv been working on, do you have to build up a song and then make that into a sequence and save that or is it better to resample and save etc.?
have any of you used it live, if you have then how?
thanks

that was somehow a very VERY tiring post you made there. Just don't think too much, just DO it, experiment.

I will generally write a simple loop, then copy it a bunch of times, add variations and changes and deletions of things in each loop, go into song mode and then arrange those loops into cohesive larger sections, then export them as sequences, then I get into writing melodies over that. From there you can get into copying those melodies into other sequences, making changes, and then arranging those longer sequences into songs.

The latest JJ is extremely stable :) akai v2.10 has a critical bug where it would save corrupted data occasionally. akai have only just fixed it!
The JJ takes all the annoying bits of the akai stuff and makes it how it should be and keeps all the bits that work anyway.
grid edit is seriously so good. I use it as a midi sequencer and copy/paste notes graphically, shift them do all sorts.
I seriously urge you to get the latest JJOS, it has literally doubled the abilities of this box of tricks. if you really dont want JJ, at least make sure you get the latest akai with the critical fix if you're running 2.10

Good news MPC 1000 users. Akai have released a fix for the pads on the 1000. As you may or may not know, the MPC1000 has a design problem where the pads will slowly deteriorate over time. This is because akai make each pad self contained.
They have now released an "upgrade" aka fix. this puts all the pads together (like the tried and tested old MPCs) this fixes the only flaw with the box.
Along with the JJOS, this thing is such a brilliant music box, I cant begin to say how much I love it!

get the JJOS and you will be a happy man. I would say use the boring akai OS for a while then get JJOS and see how much better it is, but what the hell, just get the JJ!
Basically a Japanese guy has written a much better OS (I suspect he is an ex akai employee) anyway, it gives the machine loads of extra facilities, such as grid edit, which are very useful. The midi grid edit is where I live at the moment, it's great stuff.
I would suggest you use my link above and navigate the to JJOS section of the MPC forums thing. More info than you can shake a stick at.
The MPC1000 isn't the best box you can buy, but for the money, it is amazing value. JJOS is £15 and you can always get a free upgrade to the latest and greatest version.
Since getting the MPC, the blockage in my song making process has been eliminated. It's seriously good stuff.
Check out the JJOS at http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/%7Empc1000/
Let me know how you get on.

cheers! i've looked into JJOS a few times in the past and it seems like a big improvement (and akai admit that themselves, from what i can tell). i'll probably have a mess around on the standard one first and upgrade when i have a better idea of the differences it'd make.

dave, this thing is awesome. i got my jj serial earlier today
i have one question you might be able to help with - if i load a break, can i assign it to multiple pads but set a different start point on each one, or do i need to make copies of the sample and trim it for each pad? i don't want to slice it as i want it to play to the end every time.

Sorry Sam, I missed your post. JJ is fantastic isn't it! The feature you want is available in JJOS2!
linkage.
I am so excited about this. The original JJOS was amazing value for money and literally doubled what the box can do, and now this new version does it again. The price is well worth it by the looks of things, and considering the tireless bug fixing and feature adding of the previous version, I'm totally thrilled at the new possibilities.
ADSR envelopes = make programs like a "proper" sampler Multiple trigger points per sample (like you want) = fantastic
And also strong £ and weak $ = value for money approaching infinity. (Well for UK anyway)
ALL MPC 1000 USERS CHECK THIS OUT!
