i think you'd be surprised to see how little people into techno overhere know about him. "aphex twin? oh yeah, they're awesome". im really curious how many people would show up if he'd play in my hometown (300.000 citizens). im pretty sure the ration bethween domestic and foreign audience would be somewhere around 20/80. although i was totally surprised to see fully packed place when merzbow was here not long ago..

I have to agree with tolstoyed here. There's obviously something that I'm missing, since the AFX CDs stay on shelves.. however, there really does seem to be a rift between the people who listen to 'techno' and the people who listen to AFX, much less anything more obscure within the IDM realm. I have met lots of people who have every 'Global Underground' mix album, or who adore DJ Tiesto, but couldn't name a track by Aphex Twin if their life depended on it. A few people I have been impressed by actually knew the name, but nothing further than that. It's exceedingly rare to find someone with any knowledge of IDM where I am. SO far I've met about two or three folks.. ever.

on my course, we briefly looked over different genres: urban, electronic, world and singer/songwriters.
people seemed to know of aphex twin, but not actually know what he does. Out of all the artists mentioned Squarepusher seemed much more popular.

hmm, maybe your place is even worse than mine heh... it's funny though, how some other 'underground' artists get a big audience though. like for instance dalek played here couple of months ago and it was fully packed. i don't find them that different to electronica scene nor do i see them as some famous group but still it appears many people know about stuff like that. although when plaid were here this summer there were surely 1000 people there. i doubt i'd find 20 in that crowd who know aphex twin. ahh people...

Haha, yes, it's pretty dry up here musically. Unless you like Tejano. Austin's great though, it's alot different than the rest of Texas, so it's refreshing to go there.
Dare I ask where you are from? It must be a decently sized place if Plaid stopped there. That's also quite bizarre about Dalek. I mean, they aren't well known at all are they? I have only heard of them in conjunction with Kid 606. Then again I don't know everything there is to know about electronic music, as much as I'd like to think I do.

hmm, now that you mention kid 606 - people who were there told me it was fully packed (people like kid don't stop here often but as it happens i was away on some festival at that very same day hehe). im from ljubljana (slovenia) which perhaps isn't all that bad, becasuse we get quite a number of gigs all the time, lots of underground stuff, but usually not top people in the bussines - i usually have to go to italy, austria or zagreb to see some of the top ones, but it's cool coz everything is close :)

Haha, so Dalek was with kid 606 then.. makes sense now.
That's very cool to be near so many noteworthy places. It gives you some options. Over here, it's pretty tough to migrate to a nearby show. If an artist decides they don't feel like touring TX or the southern US, *poof!* there goes that tour. better luck next year/decade. Squarepusher was the luckiest gig I caught in ages.

i see..well i haven't see pusher yet :(
as for dalek and kid - kid was here with entire tigerbeat bunch a good year ago and dalek were here couple of months ago. but i guess people here just like hip hop oriented music better or something. although dalek were playing some sort of real noisy music and i had a feeling many people didn't expect that :)
