dunno, why so many consider it to be arty...it's just a film
with nice scennery, music and bill murray, who's brilliant.
and well, feelings. not really arty.

and that's the thing, I just don't understand what is so
brilliant about Bill Murray's performance... I have no idea
at all... and it actually kinda annoyed me that he was
nominated for an accademy award for it...

well, there's no way anyone could do better this part...it
just seemed totally real. not many actors can do that. and
on top of it all he's one of the funniest people.

shrug... I guess this is the type of movie you either get,
or you don't... and I don't...

Sorrrry but once again I'd just like to say how damn much I
liked this film. It makes such a change to see a new film
that's had as much hype as Spiderman, that's actually good.
I'd watch it now but I'm boarrderr line drrunk.

I just watched this for the first time tonight. I enjoyed
it. I'm bad at describing films so I don't think I'll try,
but it gets a solid thumbs up from me.

Well, if there's anything I got out of this film, it's that
it shows that Sofia Coppola uses surrealism in Lost in
Translation
just as her dad (Francis Ford) did in
Apocalypse Now!
If that means anything...

well, seeing as lots of directors use surrealism in their
films, it doesn't really, no..

but i guess thats the point. well shot though and good
music.
and what is brilliant about murray again? maybe i missed
something..did anyone actually find this movie remotely
funny?

"pretty fucking lame portrayal of japan and japanese
people"

umm, it got nothing to do with japan or japanese people...it
just so happens that they met there..that's it. ahh

there were several parts that i laughed out loud to. i think
a part of his brilliance was the perfect comedic timing and
delivery that fit within the confines of the serious
dramatic movie.

quality film, I really can't wait to get in on DVD. Its one
of those rare films that come out on nowhere and ends up
being one of the best films you've seen for a while. If it
wasn't for films like this and 'Eternal Sunshine...' I
probably wouldn't watch a hollywood film ever again.

Anyone got the DVD yet? What are the extras like? Its only
£12.99 on play.com so really i should just get it but i've
just ordered the new ipod so...

I got it. Therre's a 'Lost on Location' Documentarry. Some
deleted scenes, an interrview with Sofia Coppola and Bill
Murray, City Girl the video and do you know that chat show
that Bob goes on in the film... well you get to see a full
10 minutes of that as if we arre watching it on japanese TV.
that's it, i think.

I just watched it for the first time last night, in the dark
with a beer, and it was a fucking joy. I think it's a very
human film, about real imperfect people. A lot of people
moan about the lack of "character development" and "plot"
but where in life is this fucking "character development",
how much does anyone's character develop over a few days in
Tokyo...where's the "plot" in life... I've never been to
Tokyo but after the film I do feel like I've spent a week
there. I really don't understand how anyone could be
negative about this film, but I think a lot of people are
angrier with the hype. As I rarely watch the tv or read
magazines I guess I was lucky just to see it without that
distraction. In summary, this film has a human heart that is
rarely present in cinema.

yes, i think you're right. the characters are so believable,
and so is the situation. that makes it extremely appealing.

it has a lot to do with expectations about film, especially
the dramaturgy you expect.

some people have a very set idea about what they want from a
film - they want a story. they want things happening that
are consequential to eachother. they want lead characters
that go through some kind of (lineair) development. in other
words, they expect a western dramaturgy.

when someone with that idea about films sees LiT, they don't
get a story/plot and thus get irritated.

like I said before in this thread, the film follows a more
traditional east-asian dramaturgy (hardly any plot, little
human psychology, more about atmosphere).

I loved it, exactly because of the reasons you mentioned. I
think it hits a nerve with "our generation" because a lot of
people in our age-group are like the Johanssen-character
(and the Murray-character too, he's just an older version
that has accepted this state more) - perpetually lost,
having little sense of direction and missing something. it
hit a nerve with me because of this.
