Actually in some states I think Spanish is spoken by a higher proportion of residents as a first language than English...I think California is nearly at that level if not already there. |

I agree about the language thing.. I think they should definately have to use English, but it's not like education in English is readily available in countries as poor as mexico. They are going to have to be here for a while before they can learn the language, so in the mean time your only option is to put up with them, unless you either a)kill them all, or b)find a way to get them all out of the US. |

Why should they learn English if they move into the US??? Lets not forget the first European colonial landings were by the Spanish. Maybe you should be more culturally diverse yourself and speak Spanish, especially as you have access to the education to do so. |

NO WAY am I ever learning spanish. Everything here is in spanish, why should we cater to them so much?? I know 2 languages and am planning on studying german. Atleast they can do is learn english. I have no problem with foreigners like I said. I just have a problem with the illegal mexians coming here and either a) begging for jobs in the st b) getting a job in which communication is necessary and not knowing any english. I hate it so goddamn much you have no idea, that and people who don't signal while driving. Damn them too. |

Umm, maybe because that is the language that is spoken here? You were probably joking anyway, but seriously that is the worst argument ever. There is just no reason I should learn spanish (even though I've 4 years of study in it) because of immigrants to MY country. How does it make sense for an entire country to cater to a small percentage of it's population, most of which are there illegally anyway, by learning their native language? If I went to Mexico (rural areas that wouldn't have people who speak english), you wouldn't see the entire population drop what they are doing to learn English so that I know what the fuck is going on. They would react the exact same way I am now, and you know it. |

Throughout history the national language of countries have changed with migrant movement. The fact of the matter is that it isn't YOUR country at all. Your existance is your business however you, nor anyone else has a right to dictate to people what language they choose to speak. If they want access to the services provided by an English speaking government who are unwilling to make provisions for dealing in the claiments native tongue then of course they should learn the language. However, Spanish settlements have existed in the US for at least as long as English. Your arguement is just the usual white english speaking american view that it is only right and proper you force your own cultural identity onto everyone else. |

No however if a group of French people decided to settle in a French community in Germany, and the German government had provisions in place to deal with them in French then I think it would be totally inappropriate for the german government to force them to adopt what would be perceived as a german cultural identity. I am learning Hungarian at the moment because my best friend is of Hungarian origin but dyslexic so I am learning it at the same time as him to help him through with it before he goes to visit family next summer (I'll fuck off over to Budapest at the same time for a holiday though :D). |

It's a mad language...very little in common at all with other european languages...it is actually most closely related to distant syberian languages. I am finding it more interesting than learning Spanish though (which I know enough to get by on) :D |
