Something can be 'not' to you liking, but that doesn't mean
it is anyless professional in terms of its creativity and
the work put into it. Thats all. To simply label something
as 'shit' is narrow minded I think. I don't mean any offense
to you personally.

none taken don't worry : ) i just genuinely wanted to know
if you thought there was no shit music ... i really do feel
that everyone believes ther is shit music ... they may not
agree what that music is but everyone does it ... i simply
wanted to see if you'd admit there is some music you think
is shit too ; )

Some music isn't as good as some other music, but I think
its just childish to call it shit.

that's ridiculous ... some is so bad to some people it has
to go in the category of shit ... that's like saying there's
no great music !

you obviously have issues with language use ... would 'not
good music' be more acceptable ? or should you always say i
think that is not as good as that or that is better than
that ?

if someone told you a real bad joke you'd say it was shit
wouldn't you ? or would you say ...

Some jokes aren't as good as some other jokes, but I think
its just childish to call them shit.

I'd argue that the main underlying similarity that unites
all IDM into a single category is the use of computers to
produce and orgainze sound. The music present people
fashionably refer to as IDM is probably that which uses more
sophisticated software... information organized that allows
maximum control over small ammounts of time that would
otherwise be virtually impossible. I think there's a lot of
"shit" these days too, even autechre and aphex's newer
material does not impress me much. It might be a sort of
cultural pendalum that has swung toward a less caring state
in regards to neurotic composing. Perhaps the large ammount
of awesome music that has suddenly become available has left
people temporarily uninspired to even try to top it. There's
different opinions of what sounds good and people listen to
music for different reasons... the two main cateorical
reasons I'd argue to be emotional and (logical?). Humans
have ears because reptiles from which we evolved were
naturally selected to "hear" with their jaw bones. These jaw
bones gradually evolved into the intricate hammer, anvil and
eardrum or whatever they're called. This theoretically also
had something to do with fish used to hearing in water but
when we came on land we needed to amplify sound because air
is less dense or something, I forget.

Mike, try fizzarum's "monochrome plural". It is actually
possibly the most similar thing to crunch's 1 I've ever
heard in terms of melody and weird crunch beats.

As far as what's popular, I don't really know how humans
behave on a macro-level. I suppose radio stations would
prefer to keep tried and true money makers rather than take
risks. Plus whatever music happens to be good at replicating
itself, in actual music and in written music and thoughts in
people's heads will be more dominant in number by
definition.

it's pretty easy to get hold of a computer, only slightly
harder to get hold of cracked music software.

therefore, easier for people to start to make computer-based
music, in this case what is called "idm".

therefore, there will also be a lot more crap music.

essentially, a lot of what is labeled as "experimental" are
just popsongs using synths or "weird" sounds.

lots of "idm" still uses a conventional verse/chorus/bridge
structure, which is pretty boring in the end.

95% of ''IDM'' seems to me to be instantly forgettable (not
necessarily BAD), especially the ''experimental'' stuff, but
that's how it is with all music. It's that other 5% that
makes life worth living, truly. I'll never like IDM as much
as rock anyway, it doesn't have enough jangling guitars.
