electronica is just as bad. coined by americans to describe
fatboy slim or something.

electronic listening music. e.l.m.

I really liked that song Where is the Love... everyone got
mad at me for it I believe, when I mentioned it, but I did
like it... :)

electronic listening music sounds just as lame as IDM... why
not just call it electronic music...

you have rock music, classical music, country music, etc,
etc... why not electronic music?

first of all, there's no way to grade a genre or category of
music in terms of quality. to attempt to do so is
completely illogical. every genre of music has nearly
infinite varieties of music in it that are good and bad and
everything in-between. you can never say "noise isn't good"
or "pop isn't good" - it makes no sense.

i hope no one takes this personally, but i hate "dance"
music and i always have. it's a personal preference, i am
not willing to say that certain dance music artists aren't
good because i have not immersed myself in that genre and
learned about it and therefore cannot judge which artists
are good or not. it's kind of like a wine expert who can
tell the minute differences between wine, which is
completely foreign to me.

that said, i don't consider aphex twin, autechre, venetian
snares, etc. "dance music". there is a clear and obvious
distinction between artists like those and fatboy slim. you
can't even compare them because they are so different. they
have different sounds/ideologies/techniques...

so at least for me, the appeal of IDM (or whatever you'd
like to call it - it really is irrelevant) is that it goes
beyond just providing simple rythms and melody to accomodate
dancing. it is usually much more complex and usually more
cerebral and challenging. there's nothing wrong with
someone liking dance music, but it isn't for me.

"coined by americans to describe
fatboy slim or something."

where exactly did you get that brilliant piece of info from?
electronica is way better than ELM or some gay shit. The
'Listening' doesnt even need to be there.. it should either
be Electronica or Electronic Music.

the answer is easy, think of music as another form of
language, there is a huge gap between everyday vocabulary,
and shakespeare.

although i am not saying people who listen to this type of
music are more intelligent, i am saying that the listeners
respond more to complex assembly in sound. the classic 4/4
and natural build up and come down of tracks we see on mtv
for exmaple is too dull these days, just like enjoying the
use of more intricate language...like in literature the way
you write, not what you write makes the difference, like a
mathematical equation, the way you balance it, composition,
all of this has a common foundation, that we respond to,
thats it

i have two answers. one is a parody of a song:

"It's only IDM, but I like it"

the other is the most obvious answer which basically makes
the question sound stupid

BECAUSE I FUCKING LIKE IT

they're basically the same but i thought that since people
like alternate endings and comentary on their DVDs, the same
would apply to my post.

it's a combination of a few things, maybe....

01. It makes them feel special because other people
actually comment that they're weird, which translates to
them they're special.
02. They are at that age where the internet/electronic music
made a connection.
03. They're trying to make music for fun
04. It's about that time in music for some Expression ie.
the Prog rock period in the seventies after the formulaic
crap.

I don't know!

Who gives a shit what the fuck genre its called? a ithink
all you guys that are so hung up over what genre it SHOULD
be classified as, are still going through the "dont label
me" teen bullshit phase.

I dont give a fuck what its called as long as someone calls
it something, because when i go shopping i dont want to wade
through moby and underworld albums because people want to be
cool and call everything "electronic" music.

And to the guy that said some shit about saying something is
bad is illogical because every genre has its good or blah
blah blah, listen NOISE IS BAD!!! i just said it. i get the
same shit through my speakers if i put my tv to channel 3!
can i burn it to a cd and called it unreleased merzbow?
sure. why? CAUSE IT ALL SOUNDS THE SAME! its fucking noise!
how diverse can it be?! ever look at merzbow in discogs? its
sick! the guy has like a hundred album. merzbow fans dont
cry, i dont mean to target him. i think all of them are
rejects.

anyways, i like it because i grew upon house, and as it
faded away this sort took its place. i never stumbled upon
it. its great music. for all occassions. and i get an even
better feeling when in my car and i pull up to someone
bumoin the D-O-DOUBLE-GIZZLE, and put on alder and elius and
drown out his jin and juice, i cant help but think the guy
is thinking......"who was that masked man?"

I guess that some people like to be pigeonholed, it makes
things simpler but it stunts musical growth. Everthing then
becomes generic because of the limitations imposed by the
sound of that pigeon hole.

I'm not a noise expert or anything, but.. listen to merzbows
'pulse demon', i was very impressed with that track.
All noise isn't like channel 3 :P
They can have very varied timbres and whatnot.

Also I've been doing alot of thinking about music and shit,
and like ol horsefactory told me, as long as it comes
naturally..
I remember when I first bought confield, I was totally
immersed in it for months.
At first I only like eidetic casein, parehelic triangle and
uviol, because they were more traditional in composition.
Then I started enjoying pen expers' beauty, and sim gishel..
I mean, I do think there is a deeper understanding of
music.
The pop music you hear nowadays just isn't catchy to me
anymore, the melodies and arrangements just doesn't bring
anything new to the table for me.
And there is also a certain complexity issue, like, autechre
has more depth, and it influences another part of the brain
I think.

Sorry for the long post ;P

friends like it too...they dont listen to it as much, but
they appreciate the production values and the originality.
some of my friends look at me strangely when i listen to
confield..and i think maybe i am weird cuz i enjoy it...

personally i'm trying to find new stuff, to get out of idm
and find new musical territories - i have enough idm
already... or even too much compared to other music (why in
hell do i have 22 Aphex Twin releases, 7 Autechre releases,
etc. and only one PJ Harvey, only one Portishead, only one
Queen Adreena, only one Masada, only one Rachel's??? etc...
my CD collection doesn't reflect my musical tastes that much
in terms of quantity/love, as i was only stuck in idm for a
while...) - it would be too bad to stick to the same genre
always and miss out on lots and lots of other great music!!

and i don't know why i like or why i don't like.

oh theres always dickheads labelling every idm listener as a
weird poser...

thats the after-effect, just like with korn when they got
huge and everyone was wearing their shirts, and screaming
"fuck you" thats the posers, then theres the people who were
fans before that, purely out of curiosity and openness...not
worried about what is in or out atm.

you know theyre selling barbies these days, the "hip-hopper"
version...with beat box and white sneakers inclusive.

its always gonna be this way because we strive to emulate
those we envy...but there are people out there who just dont
bite like that.
some people just do their thing, so lets just leave it with
this thread because its not solving any important problem,
it'll only incite more bullshit to come into the board

"because when i go shopping i dont want to wade through moby

To be honest, it sounds like you are the one caught up in
the "don't label me teenage bullshit" as you don't want to
be associated with moby, who by the way, is
electronic music (at least his earlier stuff when he still
gave a shit was).

I agree though, I LOVE drowning out someone's Creed or
Tu-pac with Ziggomatic v17 or something... it makes me think
of a Mastercard commercial..

i am not listening only to IDM, but i have many CDs told to
be IDM.

i am only looking for special music, which you would miss if
you don't listen to it after a time.

i think that's the difference to good music and
too-mainstream music. the latter you can replace with any
new CD you buy (so called EMPTY music), but worth listening
music is in my opinion and ears unique.

tell that to your friends :)
