it makes sense that it looks more like they found a way to
quantitatively classify music in genres instead of
quantifying the complexity (which, to me, was rather
disappointing)?

complexity it's another arbitrary standard of classifying
things but it's not like the most complex the better. they
could have used 'simplicity' for what is worth. what i was
gathering from that study is that different types of music
(regardless of the genre) have different time masking and
emotional responses. but the responses you could get are
totally dependent on the way your trained your ears across
the years. dependent is also the definition of genre and the
effect such genre has on you.

i'm listening to a lot of music but lately i'm restricting
my choice to a few tracks in a day, played repeatedly and
xometimes insanely but without any specific goal (for my own
amusement), and i noticed that different genres have clearly
a different effect on me. often i play some music with the
deliberate aim to feel the effect such genre plays on me.
and the more i succeed, the more this kind of psychological
dependence becomes evident.

in conclusion i don't know what that study is talking about
but if i translated your post correctly, i think what i just
said it's pretty relevant.
