Joy Division "Closer" then Yello "Stella" started my
interest in high end class A stereo equipment.

"We are the League" by the Anti-Nowhere League started my
descent into PUNK, then came along Primus "Frizzle Fry" and
the Butthole Surfers "Locust Abortion Technician, where my
dabbling in shrooms came about. Skeptics "Amalgam" brought
out the true kiwi patriot in me and led me to do the Bailter
Space sound engineering course.

Godflesh "Streetcleaner" was the basis of a highly charged
debate I had with flea who was then called Flesh Chamber 9
on the rec.music.industrial newsgroup, after that the Mortar
complilation stole my heart after flea sent it to me and I
won him over with God "Possession" and John Zorn's Naked
City.

Massive Attack "Mezzaine" and FSOL "ISDN" gave me optimism
during a really dark period of my life when we were just
really poor and living in a dump.

Download's "Paradigm Shift" helped me enjoy loud music
again. and I rediscovered the Internet after a long
absence.

Squarepusher "Selection Seventeen" and Caustic Window
"Compliation" satisfied my urge for futuristic music as did
Drukqs when it finally came out.

summer of 1993, i was pulling through records in little

my life more than any other, by far.

next in line are:

Rush - A Show of Hands
Aphex Twin - On
NIN - Downward Spiral
Front Line Assembly - Tactical Neural Implant
Bel Canto - Shimmering, Warm and Bright

hey, props to titsworth for mentioning the Canadian Neil
Young (even though I can't stand him, mostly because of his
whiny voice)...

albums that have changed my life though? Well, I don't know
if there have been many, if any, that have totally changed
my life... but lots of music had a big impact...

lets start way back in, hmmm, grade 8 or 9 or so... a couple
pals of mine were HUGELY into Genesis (from the 70's, the
Peter Gabriel era), and so one day one jof em played a song
for me... I thought it was cool... so I went out and bought
Selling England by the Pound... it's still one of my
favorite albums, and that really opened my mind to "weird"
music... from that point on I really never discounted any
kind of music, and even looked for weird music... I think my
openness to electronic music was started here, as I begun to
really appreciate the synthesizer, and pretty soon Genesis
instrumental songs were becoming my favorite tracks of
theirs...

the next band to have a big effect on me was Radiohead... I
started listening to them just after The Bends came out, and
have followed them ever since... The Bends because my
favorite album... then Ok Computer surpassed that when it
came out... and damn, I still remember listening to Kid A
for the first time... that whole period of my life was so
low and dark, probably the darkest time of my life, and I
still remember the rainy day when I bought Kid A and
listened to it over and over and over that day... it was a
revelation to me... I hadn't heard anything like that
before... also around this time I bought the album Passion
by Peter Gabriel, and this album has probably had the single
greatest effect on my life over any other album... it alone
helped pick me up, and get me out of the low point that I
was in... and it also opened my eyes to the vast styles of
music around the world... I swear to me, there is more
emotion and visual feel in an African drum then in the most
gorgeous melody... Passion is still my favorite album...

the big tracks that got me into electronic music were
firstly Halcyon by Orbital... I remember going to a church
retreat (of all places) and hearing this song on a v

video there... when I got home, I searched and searched for
it... I knew it was on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack, but
didn't know the group or anything... but I eventually found
it, and was hooked... my first real electronic purchase was
In Sides actually, because I went to the store looking for
the brown album, but it wasn't there... then the two other
tracks that hooked me for good to electronic music were
Heliosphan and Xtal by Aphex Twin... a friend of mine sent
them to me, and I just thought they were the best thing
ever... ACTUALLY, not knowing how hard it was gonna be for
me to get SAW85-92, I originally wanted to get that when I
went to the store that day, but got In Sides after... and
the rest as they say is history... those were the big
turning points for me as far as music and stuff is
concerned, and those special albums definitely helped me
through some hard times... Passion especially... there are
so many reasons why Passion is so close to my heart... but
mainly because it was there for me like a friend... it's a
weird thing to say, but it really helped me through a rough
time, and now whenever I listen to it, I get so emotional
because I can feel what I felt during that rough time... but
then the album brings me out of that as it ends on a hopeful
and uplifting note...

also, Steely Dan helped spark my interest in jazz, which
I've slowly been trying to explore... mainly the Aja
album... that album is superb...

and one final song that is really close to my heart is
Moonlight Sonata by Beetoven... it's a piano piece, which I
know how to play on piano, and whenever I feel a little sad
I just play that... it's such a release for me...

there, that's my story!

at the record shop... that changed everything

-xanpha ep1.2 this changed my life in that when it was
finally released, i released all the shit, negative energy
and tension from the last 5 years of my life...

it was pretty cool... twas my first time there... we spent
most of the time at my girlfriend's dad's three story
townhouse (the townhouses are real cool) just outside
downtown st. john's... so i got to see all the cool graffiti
and interesting little alleys and whatnot... "lanes" that
are nothing more than glorified driveways, etc.
got to see the battery, and signal hill... both were cool...
and also cape spear... also very cool... in general it was
cool... i like the way all the pizza places have garlic
cheese fingers... the only thing i might say is that on some
levels, it seems like St. John's is a little more culturally
deprived than it has to be... i mean, there seems to be lots
of enthusiastic free thinking youth... but access to things
like vinyl seems pretty limited... and of course you don't
get a whole lot of cool shows... i understand that there are
perfectly legitimate reasons for this deprivation... i just
think it's a shame, and hope that the youngins see fit to
change it very soon (instead of moving away, out of sheer
terror due to the freshly elected conservatives).... a
beautiful place

heh, I don't much like downtown St. John's... it's too
confusing for driving... :)

I live up in Pippy Park there, up behind the confederation
building, and I like it up there just fine... hehe... St.
John's is a beautiful city though... the view from Signal
Hill is quite nice... me and some pals of mine skipped off
class one time in high school, and from downtown St. John's
we made it out to Cape Spear in like 5 minutes... almost got
into a head on collision too... :)

and there aren't really a whole lot of music stores in St.
John's anyways, let alone places to get vinyl... you can get
some in Freds Records, but that's mostly second hand I
think... but it's a cool place... and like you said, there
aren't many shows there... we're pretty cut off from Canada,
but why would a big band or singer go through the trouble of
going to Newfoundland anyways, the population isn't big
enough to justify it really... it's picked up a bit recently
with the new stadium that was built, but it's still not the
best...

hehe, Ludacris is gonna be there in November I believe...
too bad I won't get to see him... something about that just
seems funny to me though... a big rap artist performing in
Newfoundland, the land of fish and celtic music... hehe...
:)

theres lots of albums that have been there when my life
changed, and which i kinda identify with a time or place in
my life.

i wouldnt say that THEY changed it, except for pigface
"fook", and in particular the song "i can do no wrong" ehich
was the first non-mtv underground song i ever heard.

and i immediately fell in love with it.

for titsworth request of explaining in what way the albums
changed my life:

*a day at the races - queen (1987 when I heard it)
it was my first album... I was 12 years old and I never
listened to music till then... not my music at least... it
introduced me into queen, which I love and I think they
determined my vision of music from that moment onwards

*use your illusion - gnr (1992 when I heard it)
introduced me into sodt heavy... then I went with metallica,
anthrax...

*diferent class - pulp (1995 when I heard it)
it was a happy poppy era of my life

*mezzanine - massive attack (1998 when I heard it)
my first trip hop album

*drukqs - aphex twin (2002 when I heard it)
my introduction to IDM

Wow, I'm with supreme on this one.

But ALSO,

Guns N' FUCKIN' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (my aunt
gave it to me when I was six or seven !!!)

DJ Shadow - Endtrouducing...
The first remotely avant - electronica album I ever owned,
and in my books, it's still only behind...

KID A.

AK47 - it's inspiring to see someone pull through tough
times with help from music.

But how is ISDN a shining example of optimistic, ultimately
cathartic electronica ?
