ophecks you are definitly the king of all things awesome
;-)

If any of you americans happen to stumble upon a copy of
earthbound on a fleamarket or something, *please* feel free
to buy it for me :-p I'll pay you back big time! I doubt
i'll ever be able to find a copy of it over here in europe.
Most europeans probably don't even know it exists. Heck, i
hardly even know it exists... i've never seen pictures of it
or anything. And the only place i've heard people talk about
it is on this messageboard.

There are used game stores all over here - I'm sure one of
them would have a copy. Might be a bit difficult tracking
down a new version of it though.

Starmen.net, you'll learn a lot there. Don't mind the
simple graphics, this game is all story and gameplay. See if
you can find the soundtrack online, hilarious and funky
music, like Melodies from Mars only way, way better.

If I see it at a reasonable price, I honestly WILL buy it
for you. It has a big FAT box, comes with a strategy guide
(and scratch and sniff stickers that smell horrible). But
the chances of finding it are almost zero! People pounce on
it like vultures. Keep checking Ebay, or just get the rom.
There's no shame.

"Yeah, Japanese carts always look leaner and
meaner.
"

As does the SNES itself! I just love how the european SNES
looks :-) It just has the nintendo look for all i'm
concerned. Lightgrey/darkgrey. And the only colour is in the
four buttons on the controller... red, yellow, blue & green.
It's awesome.

I've seen pictures of that blocky american SNES with the
purple buttons... it just doesn't look right. Altough i
suppose it's just a matter of what you're used to :-)

I wish i also had the booklet... but i don't wish it so much
that i also want to pay huge amounts of cash for it :-/
Ohwell. I suppose the cartridge itself is what it's all
about. I'll just have to live with it :-D

Are that worldmaps on that poster? That's really great! I
remember Zelda also used to have a big ol' map included with
the game. I always unfolded it as i played the game... made
me feel like a real explorer ;-)

And where is "here" exactly? We have used gamestores in the
netherlands (where i live) as well, some even carry american
cartridges, but i have never seen a game called
earthbound there.

If you really do find a copy of the game over there in
little dead licky, please contact me about it :-D I'm sure
we could work something out! I don't mind if it's used or
not. If the box was still there with the booklet would be
nice, but not necessary.

I took a small peek at that site, it looks very thorough...
some people must be really big fans of the game :-p
I'll check it out when i have some more time! Thanks for the
link! :-)

Actually i think those graphics look pretty good. That is
what videogames should be all about, wacky fantasy-worlds...
Simpleness is good, less is more :-)

look at the camera...
ready...
say "fuzzy pickles"

lol, what's that all about? I gather earthbound is not a
very serious rpg? It looks funny more than serious :-p
Scratch and sniff stickers on the box?! Haha... oh man...
why does all the good stuff never make it to europe? :-( It
all sounds wonderful!
Again if you happen to find it i'll be eternally grateful...
but i won't hold my breath for it :-)

I actually don't have my own computer. There's just this one
computer that i have to share with the rest of the family.
And it's crappy and old, i doubt it'd even be able to handle
those roms ;-) But anyway i don't wanna play it like that,
it would just distract from the experience.

god yes earthbound is WONDERFUL - i recently also found a
ROM for Mother on NES (it was called Earthbound Zero when
planned for US release but never made it to these shores)
Good stuff. It also has some of my favourite music next to
the Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger series.

Dr. Andonuts' Theme would easily appeal to some of the
people on this board....

It doesn't take itself very seriously, and it has a BIZARRE
sense of humor. There's a boss called Big Pile 'O Puke, and
he's... just a big pile of puke with eyes. It's a riot, but
it's still got a sensitive side. You'll laugh, but you'll
also cry. It's unique! There hasn't been anything like it
since, I hope you get to play it soon.

they recently released Mother 1+2 (called Earthbound here)
in Japan on GBA. Mother 1 is the unreleased (in
US)Earthbound Zero and Mother 2 is Earthbound from SNES.

No word yet if Nintendo plans to bring it here, but i
wouldn't doubt it. Rumors have it that Mother 3 is in the
works too.

Btw, Ophecks, why was Earthbound 64 cancelled?

don't forget the final boss - so very memorable, but it took
me forever to realize how to beat him though. but the boss's
death scene was incredible for the time.

i use "boss" so i don't ruin it for surrounded. :D

Yeah, the music is too damn good. In case anyone wants it:

The soundtrack

and the program to listen to it

I dunno why Eartbound 64 was shot down... it looked good,
but I guess the first one didn't sell too well and there
wasn't huge demand for this, so they quit. It's a business!
Mother/Earthbound is very much a cult thing. There's a true
sequel in the works though, for GBA! Earthbound 3. Maybe
late 2004 or something.

The Mother0/1 release for GBA... I don't think that will
ever make it out of Japan.

I checked out the site a little more now. It's gotten me all
excited! :-D It looks like a lot of FUN! I love that it
takes place in a modern world, what a novel idea!

The history of the series is really strange though.

Nintendo translated the original nes-game, but didn't
release it?

They released the snes game twice, but it still wasn't as
succesful as they hoped.

And seeing all those screenshot from the cancelled n64 game
was strange too... it looks so "finished"! I would have
expected an unfinished game to look more empty or something,
i dunno... maybe just characters set against a black
background or something :-p
But those screenshots look like a playable game already.

I definitely hope to play the snes-game sometime! It sounds
like just my kind of game :-p

Meanwhile i'm incredibly frustrated with Chrono Trigger,
hehe. I love the millenial fair so far. That whole
marketplace feels so lively and there's so much to do...
it's just great. But i'm stuck in that huge tent with the
clown he just has 2 hands and a head. The 3rd game is just
too hard :-s With the three monsters you have to push back,
and at the same time make sure the girl doesn't get
burned... aaargh! It reminds me of those old game&watch
thingies. And i hated those! I just don't have quick enough
responses or something :-p
I feel like giving up, i hope finishing that game isn't
necesary for the plot of the entire adventure!

Oh yeah, and what exactly is the difference between "new"
and "new+"?
Both options are available from the title-screen. I picked
just "new"... did i make a mistake?

You don't HAVE to complete all the games in the fair! It's
just for fun and prizes. And some of them can be fucking
annoying. I can't even come CLOSE to finishing all the soda
without a turbo controller.

Just look around and eventually when you get to the top
exit, Marle will want some candy and you'll be on to the
REAL start of the game.

And depending on how ''nice'' you are to her and the poeple
at that fair, you... never mind. You'll see, if you get that
far.

''New +'' is for people that already beat the game. You
restart with your high levels, and you can work your way up
through the game seeing all the different endings... I'm not
sure I should say what I mean by that, could be a spoiler.

"You don't HAVE to complete all the games in the
fair!
"

Great! I completed the other two challenges in the tent (the
one with the 3 soldiers, and the one with the crono-clone
that you have to mimic), and i'm just gonna let the 3rd one
slide :-p
And yeah the drinking game you mentioned is also nearly
impossible... everytime i get to six sodas time's up.
Ridiculous. It can't be done!

But i'm already beyond the fair :-) I'm loving it now! I'm
in the past now. Damn... this game explores the concept of
time-travel much deeper that Zelda OOT ever did! I love how
Marle just dissapeared because history had changed. It's
almost philosophic. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Or to hear it for that matter... this game has some of the
most beautiful music i ever heard in a videogame.
Some of it gave me goosebumps just like any "regular" kind
of music would. It's pure art.

And thanks for the information. I'm glad i didn't select
"new+", or i would have thought the game was ridiculously
easy :-p

I also just discovered that holding the b-button down makes
me run, which helps alot. :-)

And speaking of videogames, i've also just received an
e-mail that a copy of Animal Crossing has been mailed to me
:-)
I bought it from some guy who was selling it together with a
freeloader (which is like a converter for the gamecube, so
it'll play american discs). As it doesn't look like nintendo
is bringing that game to europe :-(
I have a feeling i'm going to love that game though. Just
reading the reviews and imagining the possibilities made me
so excited.

I may have to quit my job to make time for all those games
though ;-)

Yeah, the time travel thing is handled GREAT, they really
make good use of the whole concept. Some wonderful twists
and ideas, tons of unforgettable scenes. Best time travel
story ever, better than The Terminator, even better than
Back to the Future. Gasp!

And Yasunori Mitsuda... man, that guy has made my second
favorite music ever next to The Beatles. This,
Xenogears/Saga, and especially Chrono Cross. He's inhuman!

Sigh, I envy you. I remember playing through for the first
time... you can only do that once, enjoy it.

*weeps

"you can only do that once, enjoy it."

You know that's a good point...
Thanks for reminding me :-)
I'll make sure to enjoy every moment of it to the fullest.

Whenever i play an rpg, i'm always loving it... and i just
cannot imagine how i could ever not love playing
through that adventure. I always think i'll be playing and
replaying it until the end of time.

But the 2nd time is just not the same :-/
I need atleast a couple of years inbetween before i can
properly replay an rpg, and even then it's not as magical as
the very first time!

But in a way i also envy you... for already playing it years
ago. I wish i would have been able to play it at the time of
it's release.

I mean the game looks absolutely fantastic, and actually not
very dated at all... but still... after having played
through games like metroid prime & the wind waker... i can't
help myself from thinking: "wow! This looks great for
it's time
." It looks great in a nostalgic kind of way.

But for a snes-game this is unbelievable. If one would have
played this game 8 years ago, i can imagine you would simply
have been blown away by every new location you visit!

Yeah, it's still impressive now, but back then it was a real
eye opener. At the time, I remember Playstation 1 was being
hyped up and the SNES was nearing the end. Then this came
out and showed how beautiful a 16 bit game could be in the
right hands, and no PS1 or 2 game ever topped it. It's eye
candy, even by today's standards. But it's more than just
nostalgia, it could come out brand new today and STILL get
high marks for graphics. Great use of color, great handdrawn
enemies, great art direction, great everything.

The only flaw is... it's not long enough. Not quite as long
as the Final Fantasy SNES games. And seems even shorter
because it's so eventful and time flies when you're having
fun.

Try getting all the endings when you're done (with New+).
You'll know how by the time you're done the first game.
There's a dozen or more, and some of them are shocking
and/or hilarious.

The game just keeps on getting better! I don't know how far
i am exactly. But i've already seen the world in 2300 AD
(amazing music and atmosphere there! I imagine spending too
much time there can actually make you feel
depressed). And have also been to the end of time. I just
love the story that seems to be full of unexpected twists
and turns. It's great!

And oh my god, when all of Robo's old friends ganged up on
him and kicked him to pieces :-s... so sad. I thought for
sure he was a goner. Thank god Lucca was able to fix him up
again :-D

Yes! That's exactly what i was trying to say :-) The game
doesn't look dated at all, and still today manages to amaze
me. (especially the water-effects are truly outstanding! The
way it glitters and sparkles in the light... it looks good
enough to drink :-p).

But at the time of release it was unlike anything before
it... and i'm sure it made a 10x deeper impression on people
back then.

I'll definitly try to go for all the different endings :-) I
want to see everything the game has to offer!

teary eyed just thinking about it. The future is indeed
bleek, and only YOU have the power to prevent this. Delta
Storm!!!1

...

Yup, game hasn't aged a bit in almost 9 years. It's like a
fine wine, baby.

BTW, the Playstation version adds EXCELLENT anime cinemas
into the mix, I played through the game for the umpteenth
time on PSX just to see them all. But the loading time for
battles and even going into the menu is extended and it
wears on your nerves. FF6 has the same problem. SNES
versions are better, despite no cinemas. It's jarring going
from anime to sprites anyway.

Here's some captures of the animation. I dunno if it's worth
shelling out extra dough (I did) for that CT/FF set,
especially since the loading hurts the gameplay experience,
but these cinemas are beauties.

Another one of my favourite parts of the game was the trial!
Ahaha! I don't think any videogame has made me laugh so much
before! :-p

That was really executed brilliantly! All those little
unimportant details from what you do at the fair, suddenly
all come together during the trial.

"have you ever stolen anything?"

I selected 'no' ofcourse.

"are you absolutely sure about that???"

Selected 'yes' (i thought i would have remembered if i stole
something!)

And then he brings forth the old man who tells the jury how
i ate his lunch, haha! "Let the record show that this boy
stole food from an old defenseless man!" (i love how they
actually talk like lawyers :-p).

I'm glad i atleast walked that kitty back to the little
girl. Atleast one good deed that worked in my defence. (i
was still sentenced to death though, oh well).

Those stills from the cinema-bits do look great i must
admit. If i had a playstation i'd probably wanna have it.
But to buy a playstation just to be able to see some
cutscenes is a little extreme i think :-/

Maybe someday in the future... if i can find a decent 2nd
hand playstation or something ;-)

But i hate waiting for something to load though. If
the game would have to load every single time you went into
the menu... hm... i think eventually i'd break my controller
in half out of pure frustration :-p

Loadingtimes are a sign of sloppy programming anyway. Where
are the loadingtimes in The Wind Waker? Metroid Prime?
Non-existent! Only Mario Sunshine sometimes had a few
seconds of black whilst you could hear the gamecube doing
some heavy thinking.
