its weird man... I havnt seen a noticeable pattern
really...

I posted here for about a month or 2 before I posted my
music.

I think that was good, because then people already knew me,
and so when I posted it, people where interested to hear
it.

But ive had times where Ive gotten over 30 replies, and
times where Ive gotten 4.

Id say the best thing to do is:
1. Talk with people. Not many people will be interested in
checking out someones music they dont know. Like someone
said before, this place isnt MEANT for sharing tracks. Its
just a natural development: Alot of people here make music.
There is easy access. Its just logical that it would
happen.

2. Talk about music making with people. Discuss your
equipment of choice. Discuss gear, and tricks... a good way
for people to listen to your music, is if they share the
same ideas as you. If they read alot that you use only
Reason, and do drumnbass, and you have this certain method
you use... after awhile, they will be interested in hearing
how you apply all this into music.

3. Be persistant. This ones a hard one. On the one hand, I
think my persistance got alot of people to listen to my
stuff. Once you get a few people listening, others will see
there is a good amount of replies, and open the thread. (If
I see a thread that is at the bottom of the list, with no
replies, Im going to assume at least several people checked
it out, but didnt comment, because they didnt like it enough
to. But on the other hand... I did piss a few people off
with my constant attempts to get my music heard. Dont over
do it... but also realise that there will ALWAYS be people
who think that youre over doing it, in the spam department.
Fuck em.

4. If your music is good, eventually, people will recognize
this, and the word will spread. Plenty of topics come up,
(can be completely unrelated topics) and someone might
mention "oh hey, so-and-sos track reminds me of this" or
something to that extent...

The harsh truth is though... if you make music that is "bad"
(subject

The harsh truth is though... if you make music that is "bad"
(subjective term, I know) people wont want to keep
listening. But hey, thats life. Thats why the medicore
guitar player in Nashville wont ever be as popular as, say
Carlos Sanatana. It sucks, but its true.

Anyways... yeah. Just, do your thing. But remember, this
ISNT a board designed specifically for sharing music... and
the more you complain, the less likely people will
acknowladge you.

whenever i love a piece of music from someone on here i
post. sometimes it's an hour, a day, a week, even a month
after it's posted, but i'll say something. if i don't say
anything it either sucked, was mediocre, or i didn't bother
with it. some artists on here i stopped bothering with
because they don't do anything for me, and that includes
some of the most popular artists here. it's not a dis, i'm
not naming names, just being honest with ya cos i check out
lots of people's music and sometimes don't say anything.

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-09-30 13:03 [#00884283]

I'm not being funny but that isn't summing anything up. the
simple fact of the matter is that

a) People can't listen to stuff because they are at work.

b) People can't listen to stuff because they are on a slow
modem connection

c) People just can't be arsed either listening or
commenting. My view is that if you have bothered to listen,
whether you like the track or not, you can type a few lines.

There are tons of things I haven't liked on here, but I
wouldn't stop listening to their new stuff because I didn't
like their old stuff. I know from my own music making since
I started 6 months ago my style has developed and changed,
and I also make vastly different sounding things, like a lot
of the people here.

Also some of the most popular artists here can get shit
loads of positive responses for tracks which are quite
frankly mediocre and boring and that will never change, you
always get cliques that will big each other up.

Just as an add on note...hyakusen makes some of the best
music on the board, very BoCish and mellow. He, along with
only about 3 others makes it into my play list all the time,
and I do think his music has been slept on a bit. Maybe that
is just due to differing taste, but I don't really think so.

Ceri I don't think I have ever seen a track that you have
posted. I have listened to a couple of your tracks but that
was through your profile a while ago.

Oh and I fucking hate people who say comment on my shit
tonight and I will comment on yours tomorrow and thecunts
just disappear fo a few weeks before coming back to spam a
little bit more.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-09-30 13:14 [#00884290]

well, I think A. and B. are both irrelavent to this...
because we are talking about people some people getting lots
of responses, opposed to some people getting overlooked.

The subject at hand is there ARE a good number of people
that listen to music. Why are they listening to some, and
not others?

C. Yeah, but sometimes I listen to a track... and I just
cant think of anything to say. Perhaps I just dont like a
single thing about it. None of my comments would really be
constructive, because in effect, id be saying "change
everything". you know? And I dont like saying "didnt like
it. sorry" If Im gonna say that, Im gonna say why.

And yeah, I do listen to some peoples stuff that I didnt
like before, later on, because I do know that people
improve. But I usually wait a few months between listens,
because improvement (usually) doesnt happen that fast.

"Also some of the most popular artists here can get shit
loads of positive responses for tracks which are quite
frankly mediocre and boring and that will never change, you

always get cliques that will big each other up. "

and while I do agree to some extent... I stand by my opinion
that most of the popular, well recieved stuff on here, is
well recieved and popular for a good reason: its good.

And to be fair... ive seen alot of the "popular" people get
told frankly when their music wasnt as good as before.

eventually someone will download a track of yours, and like

it takes time.

Yeah, if anything, people seem to be more honest with the
"better recieved" artists here. They know that they have
enough good comments. I mean, look at flea and raimons- I'm
a lot more harsh in critcising their stuff as they've set
the bar that much higher for themselves with their past
work...

Oh and to clarify what I said earlier, for a long time I was
in work, so listening to people's stuff was either a risk or
a pain to remember when I got home and hence I only listened
to stuff I knew/looked good.

ecnadniarb: I tend to only post links to tracks I really
think are worth other people DLing or that I genuinely want
feedback on to bear in mind for a remix or similair.
Alsoyes, those people who say they'll check your stuff out
then dissappear annoy me too. I make a mental note and
"blacklist" them so I won't DL their stuf fin future. Petty
I know, but it's amusing and fair in a strange way...

Number one: Why aren't I on the cool list? ;)

Number two: I make music. I know that some of it is crap,
some of it is good, a few tracks are very good. I have never
uploaded any of it because to be honest I don't care what
others think, because in the end its what I think.

For example AFX has loads of unreleased tracks which he
thinks are crap, which some people (maybe most) will love,
but he doesn't like them so thats that.

If I want a review, I would send to Sound on Sound magazine,
or send a demo to warp/rephlex/who ever.

Why would I want a bunch of people who Ive never met,who
could all be little 13 year old bitch boy synchophants to go
'yeah its great'.

If a track was good, I would know its good and wouldnt need
people to tell me.
Now stop arguing you 13 year olds. hehehehe

Yes, that's my main problem. In order to give myself the
neccessary willpower to save up for something (or at least,
it makes it a lot easier to do so) I need to have a go on
one first. None of the stores near me will let you demo
stuff other than their shite £50 gemini mixers that are
worn out from little kids fucking about with them. I asked
for them to order me a PMC 06 Pro D a while back while I was
working (and hence could afford one) on the understanding
that I could demo it and if I liked it, I'd buy it there.
They said something along the lines of they could order it,
but they'd need 25 or 50% (I forget which) of the cash up
front and if I didn't want it after dmoing it, the deposit
was non refundable.

Stupid really, if they would just ask for a few reduced
price demo models from the suppliers I'm sure they'd sell
far more of the premium stuff. No one is going to spend
£1000 on a bit of hardware they've never had a go on...

I dont like the idea of the vestax thingy. smartmedia? hmm
my sp303 has that and to be honest its crap.(the smartmedia
for audio concept) basically i think vestax stuff(like fx)
is a bit too imbetweeny. its not one thing or another but
then its not like alesis airFx or anything, bizarre! Shops
are really annoying like that, although in my experience
places like turnkey are great, but thats in london, so bit
of a trek for you, why not make a day of it?
Something to do before you go back to uni?

I really would love to have the time to make my own little
box of tricks too. If I ever do ever get round to doing this
synth, its gunna be a sort of hybrid like the vestax thingy,
but better! (dare to dream).

wow weve changed this topic from people bitching to people
being nerdy about equipment:)

Yes, I'm currently working on a system that does a similair
job to the faderboard that uses Ableton live and a midi
controller (it's getting there...) in a simialir way to the
faderboard. I've started doing a hip hop track using it and
it's not too bad. (read more about it here). The
smartmedia put me off a bit- I could see how loading
several different songs into it of a night could be hard in
a performance situation. It'd be nice if there was a decent
menu system on it and an internal HD (they're cheap enough
these days!)

The prototype of the faderboard that shingo2 made and took
to vestax to get them to develop was actually made from an 8
track and some other bits and pieces.

Ah, the pacifying effect of tech talk,
silences any room and dissapates all tension ;D

dave: it would be argued that any artist out there who
releases their stuff (be it you, me, or Aphex) have some
amount of ego. You need to in order to have the desire,
and/or balls to share your music.

If getting joy out of sharing my music, and knowing that
people out there enjoy it, means Im egocentrical, then so be
it. But every artist you ever listened to is the same way,
or else you would have never heard of them.

I personally find it a great feeling to know that there are
people who can connect with my music, and enjoy it.

Music is a language. Use it to speak!

thats equivilant to saying "I can speak fluent italian...
