agreed

but how about this situation: girl gets pregnent... and the
guy doesnt want a kid... having one would truely fuck him
over... financially etc. but she wants it... no reason
besides she just wants a kid.

what then? it would be the guys life who is getting
fucked...

i think that people should get a license to have a kid. as
it stands anybody can have a baby regardless of
circumstances no matter how poor a parent that person would
be.

yes but in that case, there IS a kid to be taken care of,
and therefore the parents of the child must both financially
support them by law.
BUT if the fetus is aborted, there is NO child, and there is
no financial support needed by the two who were once
possible parents.
so that analogy would not be much of a strong parallel to a
woman deciding to abort the fetus in her body, because after
the abortion, there is no existing third entity.

Is it worse if you have an abortion while you're stealing
music on Kazaa?

what I was trying to say... is that the man needs to have
some sort of say... cause it DOES affect him too...

I wish Cliff Burton would rise from the grave and track them
down and eat their brains. Yes he'd still be hungry
afterwards and James Hetfield would not be noticeably
different afterwards but still. I'd make a flash of it if I
had the skillz.

i basically got this idea from what you have said:
you wanted to state (?) that since the man and woman both
copulated to create the fetus, then they should have a 50/50
split on agreeing what happens to it. well it doesnt' work
that way if they have a conflict of interest. if the guy for
instance, doesn't want the child, but the girl does, you
can't magically cut the baby in half when it's born, and
have your problems solved. so the best way to resolve these
issues is to unfortunately have an imbalanced decision
(under conflict of interest), where the woman has the upper
hand.

ok... i see what you mean...

but in that case... id say the woman would at least give the
father an option of not being legally (ie financially)
obligated to the kid...

you cant tell a woman to abort... but since its not
something thats in the mans hands... I dont think he should
suffer for her decision...

its a touchy subject... and Im not sure if I can explain my
side too well over the net...

but I think a persons future has more wieght then just a
woman wanting to have a kid.

althoughhhh... pretty soon (if not already), you can have
kids outside of the womb in some test tube or something.
which would mean that maybe laws could be changed, so that
if one wanted the child and the other didn't, the fetus
would not be in any BODY, therefore independent.. and that
would bring in a whole new bunch of problems and ethics ;)

carrying the child in her womb for 9 months.

i see... so she would have less weight in the decision...

but it doesnt change the fact that the man is the biological
father... and thus has responsibilities...

We really do forget the bottom line reason for sex, which is
to procreate. If two people aren't willing to raise a child
together then they probably shouldn't be having sex. Of
course society doesn't like to think that way so alas the
abortion is invented. I don't say this to be judgemental or
cavalier about the individual situation that brought up the
topic, but seriously if you were willing to have sex with
someone then you should be willing to commit to that person
and take care of that child, even if it is in spite of the
odds. There are govt. programs out there that can help.
Abortion isn't anymore a valid solution to an unwanted
pregnancy than murdering someone because they have info on
you that might ruin your life or stealing money because
otherwise you won't be able to eat or pay your bills.

I also think the woman made the decision to have a child
already when she had sex, so yes the woman does have the
right to choose. Once she has made the choice, however, she
has an obligation to follow through with what she has been
entrusted with. Sex is meant to be pleasurable and deep,
but between a husband and wife who are willing to have
children. That being said, I am not against contraception
for a husband and wife who are waiting to have children when
they are ready or because of health reasons.

now leaving the middle ages,

unwanted babies are bad: they grow up to be unproductive
slobs and have more unwanted children.

You're doing the right thing imho, man.

I'm lucky as my gf has trouble becoming pregnant. So I don't
even have to use protection (it's ok I've been assured
numerous times by her that it's ok)

oh also how's this for a morally complex story

I know a girl who has a child, he's like4. she's about 19.
she's a brilliant mother with him and loves him to death.
the father is still with her but you can tell he'd rather
not have a kid, BUT he's doing the right thing and
supporitng her and still is a good father and stuff. he's
about 20 or 21 I think.

NOW she found out recently that she has a ...tumour or
something wrong with her brain and eh can have surgery to
get it fixed...but only a 40% success rate (ie 60% chance of
death). She wants to have another child. I can't for the
life of me remember why but I had it explained to me once
and it did make sense.

The father doesn't want another kid.

She's thinking of having the operation in like 2 years.

Talk about messed up. Nobody (especially someone so young)
deserves to have that kind of decision weight bearing down
on them.

We're all praying that she will be ok.

PS this story is totally true.

I don't like abortion. But i know several people that have
had abortions and a few that have carried the babies to
term. Each case was totally different and I don't judge any
of them based on their decisions because ultimately it was
their bodies, and their lives that were affected by their
own decisions. I have to hope that they make the best
decisions for their respective situations.

I would never force anyone to make a decision as serious as
this. I would only stand by them and give them the support
and advice they undoubtedly will need for such a life
altering event.

I disagree. A fetus is not really alive. It is in the
process of forming, so that it can come alive. Therefore,
it can't really die. It can just never live.

But does it know its alive? Is it self aware? Do you, or
anyone, remember when they were a fetus?
They used to get rid of babies in the first two or three
months after birth if they found something wrong with it.

But I'm not at all an advocate of late term abortions (or
whatever they are called) anyways. If you're going to have
sex know what you're going to do before hand if in fact you
get someone pregnant. If that choice is an abortion; do it
asap, don't be a lazy fuck and get it over with.

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2003-09-08 14:43 [#00855284]

so then rather than abortion, they should have an option to
remove the fetus and keep it alive on life support if the
mother doesn't want it. then if it dies, science and
technology are to blame.

therefore, the solution, obviously, is artificial surrogate
mothers. problem solved.

i'll get my biologist and robotics friends to work on it
right away. expect results within the next.. oh.. 2 - 300
years.

mappatazee, I'm sure it looks alive when the doctor mashed
it up and rips out the mangled body of the fetus from the

Also another thing: I don't remember most of the shit that

not remwembering when you're in teh womb is kind of a bad
