What happened w/ the guy who got sued by Cage's estate for
having a silent track is that the guy actually credited Cage
in the liner for a writing credit. He thought he was being
ever so witty and that it didn't matter...but the estate
thought otherwise. Yeah, it's silence, but if Cage is going
to go so far as to record it and put his conceptual artist's
frame around it, his estate has to protect it.

John Cage... I always loved his split punch... I know, I
know, I'm immature. It was just a pretty funny and cool
thing at the time.

"how do you sit down and listen to a silent track? There
is nothing on the track, so you're not listening to it, but

what is around you... it's just a stupid idea..."

thats the whole point - the surrounding sounds, not the
silence. Cage was trying to make a point. however why you
think it's a stupid idea isn't clear (seeing as you give no
arguments).

I don't get why everybody is getting their knickers in a
twist on this one - he had quite an interesting idea, tried
to make it practical through this work and that's it.

music is not just nice little chords and melodies is what
he's practically saying. it can be all sound if listened to
in the right context.

feels almost like people are taking this view personal or
something.

I don't know, it just seems like a stupid idea... cause I
have no interest in purchasing anything with silence like
that on it... and really, for people who can't appreciate
the sounds around them anyways, I think all that track is
going to do is annoy them... "What the hell is up with this
silence crap?" is probably what they'll say...

i guess all that avant garde shit would be easier to like if
a sense of humor came with it

well, I wouldn't purchase it either - I see it more as a
performance piece.

also see it in context of the time. now it wouldn't do
much.

as for the annoyance - nothing wrong with that. one of the
things art tries to do is elicit some kind of reaction from
it's public. some people will like it, others won't.

People miss John Cage's sense of humour. His stuff is full
of the spirit of Dada and Zen. And yeah I think he's fucking
brilliant.

And surely it's testament to the power of his ideas that
this discussion is going on now with so many strong
opinions.

His books "For the Birds", "Empty Words", "Silence" and "M"
are wicked.

And before you judge Cage please listen to "Roaratorio" as
it is the most amazing radio work I've ever heard.

"I see it more as a performance piece."

His book Silence is very interesting and even predicts the
future of music pretty accurately in regards to electronic
music.
