The existence "quote" is from me. By "post-modernest I am
responding to the fears of the two main authors we are
reading in my Seminar class - Searle and Hampton. They are
afraid that without objective standards of behavior ALL
standards of behavior go right out the window. I am their
worst fear. So be it.

I'm in Charleston, South Carolina at the College of
Charleston. My grandfather graduated from here in 1924. I'm
a Philosophy major and a Religious Studies minor.

Carbs make me feel way more shitty that eating fat and
protein. How do you feel after a plate of pasta or pancakes?
Being thin and healthy should counter act the negative
elements of fat on your cardiovascular system. Oh, we are
omnivores we have incisor teeth. We were not meant to eat
only vegetables.

Hehehe, i'm just substituting cigarettes for food at the
moment. It's not exactly a health-oriented diet.

I'm going to eat this thread alive. FYI, I have an honors
bachelor of applied science in nutrition and dietetics, and
I've been in private practice for a number of years as a
clinical nutritionist. If you'd like the short and dirty on
the atkins diet, you've come to the right place.

Go on the atkins diet if:
-You want to lose fast and TEMPORARY weight (great for that
special date, or event)
-You have ALOT of weight to lose
-You don't care about getting cancer or heart disease

Do not go on the atkins diet if:
-You ever plan on eating a carbs again.
-You plan on retaining your muscle mass.
-You plan on losing weight in the long run.
-You dont' have enough money to afford pills and diet
supplements
-You want to live to an old age

I can't begin to tell you how many patients I have seen that
have screwed up their metabolisms up beyond belief after a
year or so on the atkins diet. I could go ON, and ON about
the politics and profit to be made on the atkins diet, but
needless to say, it is possibly one of the most disgusting
and deceptive money grabbers in the dieting world.

(Most likely) after a year or so on the atkins diet, you
will stop losing weight, you will have lost precisious
muscle mass, you will have dramatically reduced your energy
expenditure, and because you have already cut carbs, you
will have to find another way to lose weight.

The word "diet" is a word that implies that one day you will
"go off" your diet. Unless you change your metabolism
through exercise and lifestyle changes, you will be doomed
to the body that you have. There are better diets out there
that are healthy, do-able, and affordable.

For more info you can e-mail me at psmclinic@yahoo.ca

Part of the reason that people "feel better" by eliminating
carbs either has to do with food sensitivities / allergies
(common ones are those high in carbs), mineral deficiencies
that result in impaired insulin function, and symptoms of
hypo and hyperglycemia.

Any diet that advises a reduction in cancer and
cardiovascular preventing fruits deserves some critical
thinking. 99.9% of the world's nutritional scientists are
skeptics of the atkins diet as a healthy means to lose
weight. The remainder is Mr. Atkins himself (R.I.P), and
those who've taken his bait.

All carbs are not equal (nutrition proverb). People need to
stop treating them as though they are.

The best way to lose weight is three days of ice cream
followed by three days of grapefruit followed by three days
of liposuction.

Don't forget to add 300, 25mg tablets of ephidrene, a pint
of heroin, and a kilo of crack.

Yes, and I would have my stomach stapled too except I need a
large capacity to smuggle that heroin. :D

It must freak you out to see people eating blocks of bacon
the size of their heads and calling it health food.

Right on the nose fleetmouse....right on the nose.

All it takes its some careful reflection and observation,
and the fucked up precepts of the atkins diet become clear.

Instead of fruit, we'll just eat hundreds of dollars worth
of low-carb maltitol stuffed, liquid shit producing fake
candy by the barrel! Hurray!

For instant results I know as the diet made me an anorexic
weighing just 47 KG, there's the Mayo clinic grapefruit
diet. Its based on grapefruit, eggs and steak. All visual
fat is removed from the meat. You drink black coffee, tea
without milk. Combined with aerobics and weight training I
was a skinny force to be reckoned with.

Other than that the sensible and healthy way is to increase
your exercise, 20 minutes a day walking, try weights,
pilates or yoga will improve your tone, make you feel good
and you can buy an exercise video so it is easily done at
home. Drink plenty of water at home, work and whilst you
are out walking - great if you go to your local park for
some rest and relaxation as well. I am sure you have great
swimming pools over there in OZ so try swimming. Eat three
meals a day, regulary if you starve your body then the
calories will not burn off, remove the fat from the meat,
cut down on dairy products, and drink diet coke.

best "diet"; lean meats, unrefined flour based carbs, cut
the sugar, eat some veggies and fruits, all in moderation
and exercise.

The only time I ever lost lots of wieght was when I changed
my life around completely. Like moving to college were I
walked constantly and the food sucked. Or when I was
addicted to my bike and used it to go everywhere.

Best diet = no diet.

A professional like me who is able to create a custom diet
according to your age, gender, metabolic expenditure,
lifestyle, stress levels, acitivity levels, allergies,
hypersensitivities, and illness would in fact be the best
option. You would be able to EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. People
tend to neglect the term "quantity" when they eat. They
just assume you can change the composition of your diet and
thereby alter your body's physiology and everything will be
fine.

If I eat alot of steak, grapefruit and eggs I will still
gain weight. Problem is, how fucking bored of those foods
will you get? You will undoubtedly eat less at the same
time you begin to eat those foods, and therefore reduce your
energy intake, and lose weight.

But go ahead and spend your hard earned dollars on some
whacky shit.

Best diet = no diet.

That's why I put diet in quotes. To cover that argument, but
you didn't catch it.

If you eat food in some sort of pattern you have yourself a
diet; So, Everyone is on a diet..

di·et1 ( P )(dt)
n.

1. The usual food and drink of a person or animal.
2. A regulated selection of foods, as for medical reasons or
cosmetic weight loss.
3. Something used, enjoyed, or provided regularly: subsisted
on a diet of detective novels during his vacation.

I realise the stigma of the word diet, but the definition
remains. Sorry. Your version of diet is number 2 on the
list.

Sushi....now there is an amazing way to eat. I'm not being
sarcastic this time either. Traditional Okinawan / Japanese
diets consisting of sea vegetables, raw fish and rice are
among the most healthy "diets" in the world. Just add some
fruit and you've got the key to super-health.

My favourite diet is the sour cream, potatoe, bacon,
perogie, steak, cheese, pasta, and burito diet. Mmmmm...I
love love love the fat. It's okay, because I can counteract
it with Vitamin C, E, zinc and a B-complex to keep the
triglycerides to a minimum, and prevent LDL cholesterol
oxidation. Tricks of the trade.

That's a start. You're already doing 10x more than the
average american. The rate of obesity in North American
(and especially USA itself) is morbidly disgusting.

A recent epidemiological survey of US children under 12
months (I think) found that the most common vegetable
consumed by that population age group was french fries (it
is in fact a vegetable). Coca-cola was found to be quite the
common addition to baby-bottles in children as young as 7
months old. How fucking stupid do you have to be exactly?

How tall are you, how muscular are you, and how much do
you weigh? I am 6'1 and 184. I lift moderate weights, so I
have above average muscularity (although not much above
average). I run for 30 minutes 4 times a week and do total
body resistance training twice a week. Less than one year
ago today I was 250 pounds. I used Atkins in conjunction
with cardio and weight training. Works for me.

Yes....who are you talking to? I'm 6'0" and 175lbs, 13%
body fat. If you're exercising, I commend you. Consider
yourself on track to true health. Just be careful when you
utilize diets such as atkins. If you're not careful, you
can end up doing more harm than good.

If I had to name a "diet" I would have to suggest the "zone
diet" as a long term weight management solution
(conventionally known as the diabetic diet until it was
popularized by Barry Sears). The atkins diet is too
extreme, and even in the late 50's and 60's was known as
"crash dieting", and was intended to be utilized on a short
term basis (until it was popularized by Dr. Atkins in the
late 90's).
