That's probably what "destroy your CPU" means as most people don't know the difference between the mobo, the processor, and the beige box called the computer. I mean, for those of them who don't call it the modem or the hard drive -

Yep, a good way of spotting hoax virus emails is the unbelievable claims,
"It will delete all your system files and mail all your bank detail to the person who made the virus, even if your internet is unplugged 1!!!"
Not heard of viral CPu damage, although theoretically it's possible if a virus was clever enough to play about with the motherboards software (not the bios- I mean diagnostic s/w in windows that some boards install) and it played about with the fan rpm/cpu temperature values to turn the fans off and keep the pc on even if the chip was overheating. And I think there was a flaw with the design of a particular firmware updateable bios a couple of years ago that would allow a virus to "update" it with garbage info thereby knackering the bios chip on the mother board.

i wish there was a 'good virus' on my computer that would do extraordinary things - for instance, if i got some .exe that would countdown and then end up putting a million bucks into my bank account. yeah.. yeah that would be good.

I have a little story I'd like to share, although I don't know if it's classified as a virus.
I recently downloaded a number of small codec installers, but when I ran them nothing happened.
I totally forgot about it until I noticed that my internet was running slower than normal. Then I noticed that I couldn't move or delete certain files because they were "in use", even though they weren't.
It all fell into place when noticed a file being uploaded on Kazaa that was from my System32 file. I went into task manager and noticed a program running, which was named something like "Bearshare." The best I could do was delete that file and a picture that came with it (of a bear).
I wasn't convinced that I got the problem so I ended up deleting and reinstalling Windows. And now I'm back on line!
