naturally one side is going to condemn the other. all im
saying is that the least we can do is show respect for our
countrymen. i fortunately dont have relatives or friends in
the armed forces (well not any more).. but do you see what
im getting at here?

as far as I know there is no compulsary drafts in any
countries participating in this war any more..so all of the
soldiers participating are professionals...engaged in a
profession of their choice..so if their profession leads
them into an immoral war...that's implicitly their
choice..otherwise why are we still chasing after Nazi War
Criminals??

Best way to do it is to pose a peace protester and instigate
a riot. Throw rocks at the police from within the crowd etc.
the anonymity of the crowd will protect you and your actions
will lower the opinion people have of anti-war protestors in
general. Governments the world over use this tactic to
justify giving all sorts of protesters a kicking.

i think respect deserves to be earned, not tossed around
like confetti, but that's just me. I reserve my respect for
those who prove to me that they're worth it.

I don't soldier bash... I'll bash or respect each individual
who comes back from war based on how they handled
themselves, and whether or not they were in it for blind
killing of iraqis, or a more noble cause.

i think you guys do. when you break things down from the
government to an individual level you cant just talk about
things being evil because it isnt that simple.

I believe respect should be earned, but deference should be
given as a standard. Naturally, if people aren't civil to
you...

nope I am just calling it an Occupational Hazard..if they
get scorn for a war that was wrong they should be able to
take it without us feeling sorry for them in advance and
hence..lessening the implications of their proposed
actions...

Lots of anti war people on this board have said things along
the lines, "Bush is evil", "The USA is a criminal" etc.

Agents provacateurs. Well known by the left and usually they
are pigs in sheep's clothing. Or something.

i'll give them common courtesy, but i don't think that a
position alone deserves my respect. If a former soldier
walks up to me and starts talking to them, i'll take the
same amount of interest i would about any profession. If
they appear to have made a positive impact in some way with
their time as a soldier, yay, i respect them. If they just
brag about all the damn towelheads they killed, i'm going to
give them hell, or at least the evil eye, for fear of
getting shot :P

yeah and that is fortunate.

i wouldnt enlist myself! im no fan of killing, a real
pacifist. but those who do show patriotism.. and for a place
like australia, i think that is admirable.

when i occasionally see someone in fatigues out in the city
or wherever, i dont feel like spitting, rather my heart goes
out to them.

i've got some black army pants. give me your heart.

okay, i'm just getting slap happy, i'm a bit buzzed still,
and now i need sleep in a bad way, so i'll make this the end
of my long rampage of posts on this subject.

Definately- deference should be the same for all people you
meet, rank shouldn't alter that.

Flea: I was just answering mongoloid's question.

Jonesy: ...and sometimes they're just leftists up for a ruck
;) I don't think the govt. would be stupid enough to use
police- there's a good chance they'd be recognised - I
imagine they'd use MI agents or even just people sympathetic
to the elite.

Flea: I may just ask for one of those next time I'm in a
cocktail bar ;)

yeah, ive seen the ugly side of the coin as well, no doubt.
i once bumped into a bunch of marines who had just arrived
in perth on the way home from afghanistan.

they were talking about how they had 'annihilated those
taliban fucks'.. they were really quite scary. what was more
frightening was to hear a viewpoint such as this 'if a 14
year old is coming at you and your buddies with an AK, what
do you do?'

its a very ugly thing. but how can a soldier have standards
when they are in the moment? they have to block standards
out.

Hi Red, long time no see :)

Rocken: Yes, a lot of people in the forces lose a certain
degree of their humanity. It's necessary for them to in
order to be better soliders.

There's neccessary, and then there's excessive... i think
the difference is to often blurred... but i'll save that one
for later, as i have to get some damn sleep you bastards.

As harsh as it sounds, what can you do if the enemy are
using pregnant women as human shields? Just get shot to
bits?

It's the people who elect to use them as human shields that
are killing them, not the ones pulling the triggers.

Sorry, I'm not trying to wind you up, but I genuinely don't
understand... what's bullshit about it? That some countries
don't use women/kids as suicide bombers as they know it's
harder for soliders to bring themselves to shoot them?

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2003-03-18 02:59 [#00601432]

In a word, no. If you are referring to a different
situation, that of Palestinian suicide bombers, those people
choose to do that, they are nether trained nor brought up to
be suicide bombers. They choose the only way they see of
fighting back at their oppressors.

Israel is the 3rd largest military in the world and the
Palestinians don't even have a state. When confronted with
helicopter gunships, tanks and bulldozers they get tired
with stones and slingshots.

But the fact that they're taught they'll go to heaven for
dying for their cause could be seen as propoganda by someone
that a doesn't believe in it, couldn't it?

Palestinian suicide bombers do not blow themselves up to go
to Heaven or for Islam, they do it because they have
suffered so harshly since their land was occupied. Do not
believe everything your Jewish friend tells you.

Perhaps not all of them, but you're saying none of
them are fanatics?!

Palestinian family friends have also criticised the actions
of religious extremists in their country- one woman we know
likened them to the IRA. They claim religous motivation, but
do not represent the majority of Christians...

The IRA are not about religion; they are about the
reunification of Ireland and civil rights for Catholics.
Religion is nothing to do with it.
