agreed, lyrically that's a classic. jay-z still shines lyrically sometimes, it's just you don't get stuck up people wanting to admit it (although half of the time it's cos they don't know better since they write him off without even listening to the albums). anyway, that's why i said "that's GOT to sting" RE: jay-z.
aesop's very white, but fortunately his voice transcends his "whiteness". not saying he sounds black (what is black? gift of gab sounds kinda white and he's black....alicious!) just he has a cool voice.

i find it somewhat ironic that you don't listen to anticon 'since anticon is for the pretentious crowd', as you seem to be very pretentious when it comes to hiphop.
just an observation i had to made because i read through the whole thread!

you cant just generalize that "anticon is for the pretensious crowd", there is some good stuff on it, I dont get how everything is called pretentious if its totally different than other things. this is unrelated but when sigur ros's () came out all I read was that it was pretentious to not have a name for the songs or cd. thats fucking stupid. anyways... back to the topic at hand, I really dont care for that line in daylight either but the rest of the song is good and labor days is filled with great lyrics, the part about lemmings falling because the first one slipped was great. also, about cannibal ox, some of the songs are really good but theres some terrible lines that annoy the hell out of me on that cd "like wayne, gretzky but I dont play hockey...like jimi hendrix but I dont play the guitar" I cant stand those lyrics (probably not completely right there couldnt remember them). I honestly do not care for jay-z at all, every cd of his is like the exact same...the only major label hiphop I care for is the roots, talib kweli, blackalicious to name just a few.

yea believe me, the irony isn't lost on me (i'm quite aware that people find me pretentious).
still, whether or not people believe me, pretentious hip-hop really turns me off, no matter what race the rapper is. it just so happens that the white "intellectual" style of hip-hop is really pretentious and i find most anticon stuff unbearable.

titsworth, what do you find so 'intellectual' about anticon?...i agree that it is intelligent, but where does intellectual come into play?...is it because they write their raps on park benches?...or because it's way more honest than most other hiphop?

it's all about 'a chicken choking and running in place...i'm stuffing mixed messages in bottles and dropping them in gutters, so when someone gets 'em, they'll be right where i was and maybe that'll help...so one day, when the snake sucks it's tail...i'll find a pot o' gold and tons o' letters left for me in a matchbox...that would be idol like grown men in tights...with fists, capes, and eye-beams...eye-beams...

the snobby attitude turns me off. i don't know enough of their songs to cite specific examples of their over-the-top intellectualism, but the point i mean to make is that i just don't dig their style, whatever it is.

i meant to say i noticed you become pretentious when it comes to hiphop, not that youre an all-around pretentious guy. probably because you seem to know a lot about it.
on an unrelated note, i never knew aesop was white! never thought of him as such (not that it changes how fuckin skilled i think he is).

tits, i tend to agree with you on much, but i really think you are confusing 'not feeling it' with 'it's snobby'. i mean, some of it is, but you obviously haven't given it much deep thought before judging by placing labels on anticon as a whole. truly, there are some beautiful words expressed through beautiful (i probably use beauty more broadly than most... i guess i mean honest, innocent, poetic... maybe) music coming from the label. you have a stiff bias, imo.

titsworth, (this is just a question, dont take it negatively) you know how you've stated before that so many people dont listen to jay-z albums etc. and formulate opinions without even hearing the whole thing, well you just said you weren't that familiar with anticon, so isnt that kind of contradicting what you said about listening to stuff before you put it down(I realize youve heard some of it but not all the artists are thr same.)

finally, someone mentioned cannibal ox. i think they're incredibly dope, not everyone's cup of tea. as for aesop, he's probably one of my favorite rappers. listen to "sick friend" and tell me he's just not absolutely ill. "i'm thinking that there town cryer's about to feel this here bucket" has to be the greatest hip-hop line ever.
