i think it's just another word for brain-surgery really. According to my dictionary, it's used in particular on criminals and mental patients... to cut away the 'bad' part of the brain.

happened a lot in the 1950's.. they cut away parts of the frontal lobes - left people as zombies.
there was one doctor who used to drive around in his own ambulance, and was extremely eager to lobotomise people - to the extent that mistakes were made.
they used to call his car the lobotomobile.. pretty awful..
yeah, I once studied psychology for half a year, a long LONG time ago..

yeah, but now that i think of it. In One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, they didn't use surgery at all. Just electroshocks.
"and was extremely eager to lobotomise people - to the extent that mistakes were made."
That's awful :-s He must have been rather insane himself to think that he actually improved people this way.
My sister thought about studying psychology briefly... but decided not to. She feared the study would be very interesting, but she didn't want to become an actual psychologist afterwards.

I always liked here come the warm jets. It's very similar to roxy music stuff and not very ambient ( apart from the last song ). I haven't really heard much of his ambient work although I'm sure it's great anyway.

No, they did give him a lobotomy eventually and that's why the Chief smothered him with the pillow; he was already dead.

When the chief picked up that sink and threw it out the window the tears were literally rolling down my face. Part of me was sad and part of me was happy. A great ending to a great film.

"No, they did give him a lobotomy eventually"
Are you sure? :-?
Hm....
I'll have to re-watch it some time. I understood why the chief killed him, but i thought he had just gone numb from all the electroshocks.
Oh well... it doesn't really matter how it happened anyway, not important for the storyline.

I read the book twice and saw the film numerous times. If you look you can see the scars on McMurphy's forehead.
It is important because the Chief decided to really kill a man who was dead, in his mind and in his spirit; beaten down by authority.

Really though, if RP McMurphy went into the asylum with more of a "can-do" attitude none of this misfortune would have happened. It was his own fault really. The doctors were only doing their jobs.
