Radiohead

i don't think radiohead set out to impress anyone with their
skills at electronic music. the synths, drum machines, and
software serve in constructing and supporting the songs.
they didn't use electronics so they could be (very unfairly)
compared to groups like autechre. they used more electronics
than previous albums (and there've been electronic
instruments on all albums) because that's what served the
songs and the mood they were going after.

I know... I never accused them of being ripoffs or
derivative, I just don't like their electronic flavored
tracks. They're distinctly Radiohead, and Thom's voice plays
a pretty big part in those tracks (backwards or cut up or
what have you) so you know it's Radiohead right away, but
I'm just not into them.

Like when Metallica does a country song... I'm just not into
it. There's no songs on The Bends or OK Computer that I
skip, but Amnesiac has a handful... Kid A has one or two.

And I know they're not setting out to make an electronic
track, that's just what it turns out as... but it doesn't
really matter what they're TRYING to do, how I hear it
matters, and if I like it.

i'm not saying they ripped anyone off. they aren't IDM
albums, i didn't attempt to say they were, i'm just
explaining why i don't like them as much as i used to, and
i'm comparing them to the logical counterpart in the music
world, their influences, which happen to be mostly IDM.
as far as the albums being cold, i think they may have
achieved that, although songs like treefingers or motion
picture soundtrack are anything but cold. distant perhaps. i
know what they were attempting to do, and kudos to them for
doing it. i've been a fan of this band for a very long time,
and i loved kid a when it came out.
after hearing BOC or autechre, really the only two heavy IDM
influences on the band, i went back to kid a and amnesiac
and found they lacked something. maybe its the addition of
lyrics to this type of music, i don't know. i still love
this band, and i respect these albums for what they are, but
they have ceased to satisfy me.

i obviously have very mixed feelings about these two albums.
its just that, OK computer was very importent to me,
something no one else could touch, and i never skipped a
track on it. in a way, its as rock and roll as an
electronica album will get. i guess when radiohead use more
electronic instruments, i just don't care for the overall
feel of it.
except like spinning plates. thats the kind of thing that to
me is completely unique, and totally radiohead, and a
beautiful piece of music as well.

I agree with you on LSP... absolutely superb piece of music.
Always reminds me of the dwarf in twin peaks.

hmm. the thing i like about that track is that it doesn't
remind me of anything. i remember when i first heard i was
thinking that amnesiac would be their greatest album, but
then i was completely let down by the rest of the music on
it.

i think the supposed idm sound of the 2 albums is blown way
out of proportion. on kid a i would definitely NOT call
idioteque IDM -- to me it sounds like a piss-take of club
music with elements of hip-hop and industrial thrown in, all
done from a dadaist's perspective with the paul lansky
sample. everything in its right place and kid a are more
idm-ish but still, they're pretty straight forward and lack
any of the techniques autechre has developed
post-incunabula, and kid a has some very organic elements
(the drums, though programmed, sound live, and it's way too
light hearted to be compared to either BOC or Ae, IMO). i
could go on, but i just don't see either album as being in
the same vein as IDM. there are so many rock songs, and then
you have forrays into jazz and more abstract styles (motion
picture soundtrack, morning bell amnesiac, etc.). i think
people are just being too unfair by measuring them against
artists that supposedly influenced the album when radiohead
never set out to compete. any such comparisons ruin the
listening experience, i think.

i agree about idioteque.
i just don't care if it is or isn't IDM. the only thing that
i'm trying to get across is that i found a bunch of artists
(BOC, autechre, squarepusher) who i thought had more soul
than anything on Kid A or amnesiac. i wasn't really
comparing them within musical genres, simply by their merits
as music.

radiohead's good music - its all the genre-fying and
bollocks that gets talked about them that obscures this.
Beyond that, what better way to position yourself as
artier-than-thou than knocking the most visible of the
"arty" bands around. I dont love all their stuff, but to be
making accusations of people "ripping each other off" is
missing the point in my opinion- theres nothing new under
the sun.

it's different being a radiohead fan in the US because here
we have shit like puddle of mudd and such. like the smiths,
they were constantly on the tv in the UK but only the
college kids followed them in the US..? that's what it seems
like at least. does anyone understand what i'm trying to
say?

radiohead is genius!!!
they are one of my favorite bands after NIN/TooL.

also, the drummer from MuDvAyNe also likes Autechre a lot.
Who couldn't, it's all genius tied together.

;...
And, down with Linkin Park and all those other hip gangster
wannabes.
