I don't like the IDM term either. Its a media invention used mainly by rollingstone writers (enough said right there). "IDM" musicians tend to be closer to classical music then anything else so maybe a better term could be derived from this.
I'm a somewhat new "IDM" fan yeah, I guess. My first love in music now that I think about it, was the classic 60's-70's rock. Floyd, zeppelin (but more of the who), hendrix, Dylan and the beatles above all. But blur was my favorite newish band before Radiohead. My first concert was in fact a blur concert as well..hmm..
As for Autechre vs. Afx, I love them both and I don't think I could pick which is better. Hmm.. two different artists with different ideas, one cannot debate which is better when we're speaking of personal taste.

I thought we were discussing music here. Or should i mention your hobby of dressing as a donkey and making love to beautiful women (or was it the other way round, we were too drunk the last time I can't exactly remember)

I was into classic rock before getting into IDM, and I still am. I was heavily into guitar music, not so much now, but I still listen to it and I still play guitar...

I go through stages. My progression has been:
cock rock ---> industrial ------> singer/songwriter ------>
dance -------> rap -----> jungle --------> IDM
Now I'm starting to get into folk music and harmonies. I also am beginning to like strings.

My stages can be represented by my favorite bands at the time...
Green Day Pearl Jam/Soundgarden, that kind of thing. Metallica Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin The Who The Beatles Radiohead Aphex Twin Autechre
The Beatles to Radiohead thing is weird, a strange transition, everything else is basically moving a step forward to a better band.

I did listen to Aphex Twin before I got into Autechre, Squarepusher, and all that stuff, but I was mainly listening to the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, The Crystal Method, Photek, Goldie, some Ninja Tune stuff and some rock like Radiohead, Beck, Sugar Ray, Eve6, Lit and some others. I still listen to that stuff though, it's still good. I was introduced to IDM by myself, I was listening to Internet Radio, with no IDM station, and they played Autechre - Liccflii (from EP7), and than, I started to like it, so I purchased EP7, and well I like it a lot, and well I went surfin on the net about Autechre, and then the internet was talking about IDM constantly, and other artists, and that's how I started listening to IDM.

I first was into well just music nothing special (top 40 shit) till about 4 years ago or something, i started listening to punkrock, and about 1 year ago a friend told me, after completing a real bizarre track of me & some phriends fucking up a techno song (pitch bends and stuff), there was a guy who made weird music, unlike anything else, he showed me RDJ album and, well you can guess the rest. I think IDM 's really cool and it should remain underground

if big beat isn't "intelligent dance music", is big band? keep in mind the phrase IDM says nothing about the utilization of electronics. on that token, was red snapper IDM? they played real instruments, but they sound "kind of IDM"? :)
