good!!!

Ok. My name is Christian Jones. I've been blessed with a
very rare Welsh surname.

Now that's better. But that name really sounds english, the
oppressors had their cruel way with your family, my lad.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-04-30 09:24 [#00200515]

I'm not sure of its origins.

Interestingly a disproportionate number of African Americans
have Welsh surnames like Jones, Evans , Williams etc.

What, jones is actualy Welsh? That is celtic, are you sure
about that? I always thought it was obviously english...
Ignorant me...

Yeah, Jones is very welsh. Welsh equivalent of the English
fake name "John Smith" is "Dai (David) Jones".

Uhm, so Jon is Welsh (celtic) and John is english (norman),
is that what you are trying to say?

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-04-30 09:40 [#00200530]

You probably know more about our history than me. I thought
the Welsh were Anglo-Celt-Saxons ahem.

groups were invading oppressors.

No, not at all, but I thought Welsh were celtic and english
originally saxon, but after the norman invasion, a lot of
english people are of norman origin... But I really suck at
history, i might be terribly wrong.

This subject is in the throws of change thank god. The
victorian theorsits came up with these great schemes of
cultural lineage. However they did not have the technololgy
or years of study that we now have. Suffice to say that as
always the invading peoples (Celts, Romans etc) only ever
occupied the top strata of society. The rest remained pretty
unchanged. Whether we like it or not us Britons are one and
the same.

Only the Britons were indigeonous to Britain. The rest were
invaders. In fact the Scots were Irish invaders. Scotland
used to be inhabited by a tribal group called the Picts.

Aw shucks this topic gets really hard to explain without a
map and other gadgets.

SO lets here it for the Human Race. That is one cultural
identity we all have in common.
