Wagner was definitely openly anti-semitic, this is something that is quite well documented. Hitler was an obsessed Wagner fan. He used to go and stand in the aisles at his operas because he couldn't afford a ticket and adopted both Wagner's anti-semitism AND his vegetarianism (strange combo huh?). The only reason that Wagner was not a member of the Nazi party is because he was not alive during it's heyday. The fact that Wagner was a racist, however, does not mean that he was a bad composer. Quite to the contrary, he's pretty amazing. Art and politics == a mysterious and often dicey combination, in my mind.
