i have a question for you,

i know that we are primarily a physical entity with organs
to keep alive and remain existing, but don't you think that
death proves that it is not our only means of existing,
after all, energy is not created or destroyed, so us being
humans, dont you think that we are beings that in some
unknown way desired to be this way instead of an insect,
don't you think we are enlightened beings being born and
dead all over again? I'm not religious or spiritual, but i
am also curious and don't like to just have clarity on the
truths that surround us. I believe that what people do Does
matter greatly, just because you're comapring what humans
function as to the larger universal scheme doesn't mean that
the universe's vastness is any more meaningful than a single
life.

i don't think our only true function is to reproduce, how
could we be here jsut to reproduce when we have frontal
lobes that can create and understand things that other
animals cannot or limited to?

Doesn't exist in what way?
I am me, I never said I was anything more or anything less.
"me" as I define it is my body and my thoughts, and the
abstract idea that I am separate from everything else.
If you say that the "me" doesn't exist, you are saying that
I am not separate from everything else, everything is the
same.
But without this separation there would be no mind nor
knowledge, and we have a mind and knowledge.

That being said, you had an interesting thought about
society - the fact that western society is mostly built up
on ideologies, ideas and practices that aren't necessary or
'true', and that people demand we follow their norms and
practices to entertain them and make them feel safe.
This could be true, but in such a case it has nothing to do
with the phenomena of consciousness in the physical sense -
that's a debate for scientists.
One can make a lot of critiques about western society, and I
do mean A LOT, but try to strip the discussion of all that
and think very simplistic - namely how consciousness arises
in physicality, and what this means, and how we should value
beliefs and things created in this consciousness.

As darisugriffin mentions, it appears as though the
universe
created our species randomly - what makes you think there
is
any design or purpose?

i don't think that's entirely honest. if you're talking
about biological evolution, then no it's not 'by chance' in
the sense that you usually hear creationists using it, but
by 'selection' as in 'natural selection'.

if you step back and ask about the evolution of the universe
i think the answer is still not randomness. you've heard
the infinite monkey theorem? you could conceivably generate
all the works of human literature if you consider a book to
be defined as a string of up to one million characters, if
you wrote a computer program you could generate all possible
books. but the number is so impossibly large (i dunno,
26^million) that you could never do it. so if you could
break the universe down to simple rules all the universes
containing life would be generated in the same way.

First of all you have to recognise that you are an animal,
pure and simple.

The human brain is more sophisticated than any other
animal's brain, but then a monkey does not boast because it
is far more intelligent than a flea.

The human brain became sophisticated enough that it could
learn language and therefore find a more powerful way to
reason and communicate, but that evolutionary process has
taken tens of thousands of years, it was not instant.

You seem to think all of this fell in your lap, it didn't -
if what you call you was born only 200,000 years ago you
would be gesturing like a moron and climbing trees. And when
you died 200,000 years ago nobody would be there to say you
would have an afterlife, just like nobody thinks a monkey in
a zoo is going to come back and be the same monkey.

What exactly has changed between then and now, between being
a primate and homo sapien? Not a lot. You are the same
animal that you were 200,000 years ago, it's just your brain
is more advanced, and now you can question things and reason
your thoughts, and you can also make up all sorts of shit,
like the afterlife and all that other bogus crap.

There is no afterlife for the monkeys swinging in the trees,
and there was none when you were a big hairy neanderthal,
and there is none now. It's a figment of your imagination,
arising from your fear of death, your desire to cling on to
permanancy.

You could say that you do live on, in that if you're buried
your body decays and feeds the worms and bugs who then
pro-create etc., but you don't come back as a fully function
individiual - the same as you were before, able to remember
who you were in a past life, which is as preposterous as it
sounds.

Inventing a religion does not make it any less preposterous
either. If it wasn't for fear of death religion would not
even exist, as that's what it's all about.

man, you're like the rawest person i've ever conversed with.
You always make me feel like i'm at rock bottom haha, not a
bad thing, but all of this self-awareness is starting to
freak me out. who knows i could just be using this english
language that developed long ago to further my fear of
death.

For real you're not even pessimistic, it's entered a whole
new level, i would call it, Barcodism

You are already self-aware and always have been. The only
thing that stops humans from being self-aware is the heap of
psychological shit and dumb beliefs they pile up in their
brains until their clarity becomes a complete fog.

No, I'm not pessimistic. I'm not saying I don't have certain
fears and insecurities - it's unavoidable because society is
such a powerful movement and we have been indoctrinated by
it, and of course you always worry about the welfare of
others, which is completely beyond your control.

It takes a strong person not to fall into line. But although
I do not want to die, I am not afraid of death as it's
inevitable, and it seems preposterous to ruin the only life
you have by becoming fixated over it. I also refuse to ruin
my life by putting "make-up" all over my intellect and
destroying its sensitivity.

I don't understand what 'realizing that you're an animal'
actually accomplishes..
You never define your terms either.
You have to define what animal is, what does an animal do,
what does it think and feel, and how are humans separate
from these (if they are?)
Just saying "humans are animals!" doesn't get us any closer
to actually understanding the situation.

I also had other questions in my earlier post that you
didn't reply to.

Err, an animal is a multi-cellular organism - and it
shouldn't be too difficult to realise you're that. Anything
super-imposed on top of that is not required by nature.

Nature doesn't require your love, your hate, your
philosophies, your inventions, your wars, your peace, your
religions, your temples. It requires you to procreate then
die, so other animals can procreate then die.

Other animals feel just like you, they get depressed when
they're ill, happy when they're fed and healthy, annoyed
when they get trodden on or teased, jealous if you give
their dinner to another animal - well some do, others are
less sophisticated.

You are the most sophisticated of animals, so you have all
that and more. Thought has ensured your range of emotions
are more varied, subtle and complex. Thoughts are useful
when applied correctly, but anything within the realm of
philosophy or psychology is completely meaningless. That's
your situation.

barcode,

OK so everything added on top is not required by nature you
say, but do we really know that?
If we dig a little deeper, we see that all those
philosophical properties are in fact not added by us
specifically, but rather they are created by nature and the
universe, and evolution.
In fact, everything we have created with our intelligence
and imagination is in fact the universe that has created.

So my question is, how can we assume that it has no meaning,
when we don't really understand why its there to begin with,
nor how it works?
It must be there because of at minimum some random fluke,
but even then it's not completely random because the
primordial elements in the universe must still have had the
capability for consciousness and all that it entails.

And even still being philosophical and imaginative does help
our survival, it helps us think up technologies and even
have sex.
There's no definite proof for why consciousness is as
elaborate as it is, or how it works the way it does, and
much less what role it plays in the universe as a whole.

How do we know everything on top is not required by nature?
Open your eyes and look, that's how you know.

You are telling me there is a master plan, but you don't
know what it is - absence of proof is not proof of absence.
I am giving you evidence to support my theory, you are
giving me nothing, just negation.

You say being philosophical and imaginative helps human
survival, does it? How many millions have been unnecessarily
killed for an idea - and continue to be? Did the creation of
nuclear weapons statistically enhance the odds of human
survival?

Alligators and cockroaches don't have ideas, but they've
lasted a lot longer than humans. They don't need ideas to
adapt and survive their environment, so why do humans?

As for sex? What's your point there? Other animals do not
require thought to have sex, even an Ameoba can reproduce.

Either accept what you see with your own eyes or live in a
romanticised fantasy world where your philosophies and
beliefs mean something. They do say "ignorance is bliss",
but you are also atrophying your brain.
