my rat is really fucked up

I killed my hermit crabs by not giving them water or
something, and 2 of my 3 gerbils and a hamster because I was
a horrible piece of shit kid. I never intended to hurt them,
but was just so fucking careless and thoughtless. If I knew
my passed dog was somewhere up there I would like to imagine
myself with a pet kiwi.

I greatly admire your caring, and awesome thread title!

Also, did you see the Disney movie I am thinking of (yes,
that one), and what did you think of it. Just because.

Poor rat. Shouldn't you have noticed earlier it was
distressed? You didn't do anything until his eye was popping
out.

WTF!
im guessing noone else clicked this link because there were
no comments on it.
i dont know what that rat thing was, but watching it being
skinned alive was terrible :O
and then they pulled this white dog out of a cage and i had
to stop watching.
that shit was easily 10x worse than 2girls1cup, or any other
shock stuff i've seen on the internet : (

to any white dog..

i didnt see anything bad happen to the dog, but i dont think
they were taking it out of the cage to take it for a walk or
anything.

watching it made me wanna help stop what they were doing,
but theres like so many other things id wanna help out with
as well.. surely enough, im just gonna sit on my ass and
forget about it, and surely enough it's gonna make me feel
like a jerk for not doing anything about it.

perhaps i'll just find solace in not eating kfc chicken.

stop what they were doing > they being the ones who put up
the video, not the ones skinning the animals, obviously.

yea living a life in captivity isn't nice in the first
place, and then you have wanton brutality to top it all
off... Much of people's lack of care or concern is caused by
ignorance and/or denial. What strikes me even more than
people's ability to be cruel is the lack of self-education
by most people. It only makes it worse how unnecessary all
of this cruelty is. For what gain?

well theyre thinking it was trauma, so there wasnt exactly
anything i could have predicted. he had the trauma and then
his eye was popping out, not much in terms of lead up for me
to prevent that.

if youre somehow implying that i dont take care of/pay
attention to my rats (whom i have had for 2.5 years now),
well, look at the rest of this thread. youre fuckin wrong

so you would choose money over a loved one?

i mean, this is a being i have raised since it was about the
size of a peanut. i have loved it, fed it, taken care of it
its entire life.

do you know of any parent who would not pay $50,000 to save
their child? $500,000? i mean, at this point his life he is
not in danger, what kind of person would that make me if i
said, "yeah, you have a good chance of surviving, but my
wallet just cant handle it. tough shit for you."

why do people equate a pet's importance with its size?

would you be saying the same thing if he was a dog or a cat?

To be honest (not to be insincere), I don't think he was
referring to the size of the animal, but rather the cost of
a replacement. Pedigree puppies with all the shots and vet
certifications can cost thousands of dollars, therefore a
400 dollar surgery bill is cheaper than the cost of an
entire new pet. I'm not saying that I wouldn't get attached
to a rat, but that, economically, I understand where chuck
is coming from. (If that is indeed where he is coming from.
If not, sorry for talking out of my arse.)

i understand that but being attached to a pet is not an
economical matter. they're not investments.

If people really cared about rats, rabbits, fish they
wouldn't keep them. How would you like to live your life
locked up? They should be out in the wild, it's ridiculous.

People say they love animals then take them out of their
natural environment for their own selfish pleasures. Pure
hypocrisy.

i was just trying to think of a reply to that, your right in
some ways, i suppose cats are ok to have, dogs need someone
to lead them, hmmm other pets like snakes lizards ect, maybe
they should be left alone i dont know

well #1 my rats weren't taken from the wild. a friend of a
friend had the mother and we were given four of them. also,
i think my rats would be much happier running around with
their siblings, being warm, being fed, and being safe from
predators (of which there are many for rats) than the
opposite of these options. wouldn't you?

Zephyr, yes, you're absolutely right, thats exactly what im
saying. I would also have to agree with Barcode aswell, if
you really gave a shit you wouldn't lock it in a small cage
for your own enjoyment.

hedphukker:
"i think my rats would be much happier running around with
their siblings, being warm, being fed, and being safe from
predators (of which there are many for rats) than the
opposite of these options. wouldn't you? "

that is exactly the unatural approach im talking about. you
talk about a rat being happy or unhappy as if it were
functioning as a human being. it just doesnt work that way.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2007-12-06 04:33 [#02151255]

Precisely, you have a romantic notion that your warm, cosy
rat is a happy rat. This couldn't be further from the truth,
these animals live on pure instinct, they're not human. Even
if it was happy, it wouldn't know it's happy anyway. If you
deny it the space and habitat it should be living in it will
get depressed and anxious. Everything it's programmed to do
is unable to function properly.

If you take chimpanzees for example. Apparently it's very
very dangerous transporting them from one country to
another. If they are locked in a cage for long periods the
depression and anxiety can literally kill them. So how can
you expect certain domestic animals to be "happy" when they
are locked up practically their whole lives.

so you're unfamiliar with domestication, eh? that's fine,
but don't try to impose your views on others when you seem
to know nothing at all about human/animal bonds.

you've apparently never known a domesticated rat that
enjoyed the company of friendly animals. try it; rats can
make good friends. they are not human, neither are they
unfeeling
machines.

regarding the cage, rats are used to small living spaces. a
rat can live healthy and happy if the living space is not
too small. if there is food, fresh water, space for
exercise, cozy bedding, friendly rat cohabitants and
opportunities for stimulation they will not want for
anything. they will not desire to seek out what they
already have!

while it's true they are very different from humans, they
unquestionably enjoy (in a ratty way) friendly
interactions.

for the record, i do agree with your sentiments regarding
animals that are not domesticated. i don't visit zoos, etc.
i don't feel that birds should be caged or their wings
clipped.

you still need to look at members of a given species as
individuals. they are not as complex as humans but their
environment and their experiences shape their experience in
the now.

that was my humble opinion...

and its not like it even matters, because the fact remains
