mohamed: I am just trying to be more pro about it and have different stages from composition through to production. Like making a film, they write the script, they cast it, they film it, then edit it and add fx, then it goes to post. I just want my stuff to go through stages like that so it has the most dimension it can possibly have. I guess it's like the difference between autechre and aphex. I want my sequencing to be as complex as druqks or analord first, THEN have my processing be as intricate as Draft or Confield (I don't expect it to be that good, but I want to set my goals high.) |

i think thats an interesting way of doing things. i'm asking cos you said "I was in the bad habit of laying down some phrases really quick then trying to produce them into something good" and thats the way i currently do my things. composing sequences individually makes me think that you have some music theory background to be able to hear what you're writing before actually hearing how the chords sounds together. or that you're using some kind of mathematics. all i know is that instinct apart one has to know what he is doing not just randomly looking for a combination that works. i'm curious to know the way you got rid of the amateurish attitude. |

I read through a couple books and picked up some scales, chord structures but i don't really have formal training. no all i mean is taking more time at the sequencing level rather that doing an hours worth of programming, rendering it to audio and then start cutting, stretching, & slathering right away. Before 75%+ of my process was working with audio files, i would have maybe a couple midi tracks but they were usually just triggering a vst drum kit. Now I am setting up multis on my synth which gives me 16 more patches that do not depend on my computer and programming some of the beats on my drum machine and not recording them to audio files right away. Then i can work with them as midi sequences first and make them complex that way, and when i do render them to audio files and start in with the glitchery it will be twice as quality. |
