They're good. It's art. I like art. Art's good. Good is
good.

I've heard this "good is good" theory before.

interesting idea.

It involves not whining about good music which is clearly
good. Think you're ready for it?

If so, good.

lee - the % are just for fun, dont take them seriously as
its obviously impossible to measure such an abstract process
accurately.

I agree, AE is 100% (% for lee only) artists, no matter what
they do. And I like them for that alone, especially when
compared to all the fucking trash on tv/radio. But I really
see them more as audio atmosphere engineers when it comes to
releases like Confield, which btw, most of the songs on that
album start out great, but then trickle into this
patternless mess while reusing the same sounds over and over
with no way to follow along, and this is somehow supposed to
keep me interested, but it doesn't. Its almost like they ran
out of ideas, and since they dont really understand music
theory (I believe they have admitted it too in an interview
I read), the song really doesn't go anywhere despite the
fact that the first 3 minutes of it were amazing.

yeah.

unless you are totally alien to music, some music can evoke
the same emotion from the listener. now i see your point
and music is subjective, and is always up to the listener,
but their are certain scales and sounds that can evoke the
same emotion from an audience, say at an opera or something.
the composer will put a piece in at certain time, to evoke
an emotion.

if say, someone would cut you up, you'd probably not be too
pleased, while qrter in the same situation could actually
enjoy it.
(it's got nothing to do with topic, i just thought you'd be
interested to know).

You completely misinterpreted what I was saying.

My entire point was that the terms 'music, noise, whatever'
are what is bogging us down. I *disagree* with
weatheredstoner's point about the songs on Confield becoming
a mess, etc.. but I am defending his engineering ratios for
the sole reason that they are useful in helping us talk in
understandable terms about the recognizable elements in the
music. I am not arguing what is and isn't music.. that gets
us nowhere.
You kind of put words in my mouth. Not only did I NOT say
that Autechre was 'non-music,' Autechre are indeed my
favorite in the entire genre. I have long been an advocate
that Ae and IDM in general are equally legitimate forms of
musical and artistic expression. I am not in the '1800's'
as you put it, my entire point was that Autechre are
problematic to people because they do not have the strict
beat/melody rift that most pop music or even techno has. As
a result, they are a bit of an anomaly in many music circles
because people do not know how to talk about it. You may be
in the next millenium of music theory or whatever but most
casual listeners are not and find this music something
significant to tackle.

AFX is good. But his music is nothing on Ae. Nothing at
all.
AFX pales, sharply, in comparison.

But that is just an opinion, fact.
