I'm nearly done listening to this... it's very, very nice. I'd say I almost immediately prefer it to any of their other stuff (but then, I wasn't that keen on OK Computer - I liked Kid A/Amnesiac best). I think I'll play it again when it finishes, and I haven't done that with an album for ages.

Seems the band don't mind that much...
From NME:
RADIOHEAD's new album 'HAIL TO THE THIEF' has appeared online - and JONNY GREENWOOD has played down suggestions the album title is a direct attack on GEORGE W BUSH.
Over the weekend, the band's sixth album was leaked onto the Internet, prompting fans across the globe to download it. This morning (March 31), bandmember Jonny Greenwood made an appearance on the official Radiohead messageboard, where he said he was "surprised" the record was online, months before its official June 9 release date. When asked what was up, he jokingly replied "the album, apparently".
"Colin (Greenwood) called and said it was up, so thought I'd check," he wrote. "I feel bemused, not annoyed. I'm glad people like it, most of all. It's a little earlier than we'd expected, but there it is. Surprised, and still not used to it happening, even after all these years. I worry more that stuff we do won't get released for whatever obscure reason, and I hate the 3 month gap between finish and release. But not enough to leak it myself!"
Speaking about the album title, Greenwood said they liked the title 'Hail To The Thief', which is a line on the opening song '2+2=5', in a more general way. As we revealed last week, the phrase was also an anti-George W Bush slogan used by protesters at the end of the controversial election campaign that put him into the White House.
The phrase 'Hail To The Thief' was coined by protesters at the end of the 2000, when controversy famously surrounded Bush's rise to office. The battle between Bush and Democrat candidate Al Gore came to a bitter end, with the result in the key state of Florida dogged by recounts, amid allegations of unfairness in the voting process.
On the day of his inauguration Bush was greeted in Washington by thousands of protesters with banners, some of who shouted, 'Hail to the thief, our commander in chief'.
Jonny explained: "Not sure where all that George Bush stuff came from. Hail is no ins

all i meant was that you should know this isn't the actual album so that you won't get disappointed when you hear it, that's all. their producer godrich said this today:
"Its the rough mixes .... some tracks not even finished. aint that a bitch? Not really what I'd want the world to hear, frankly. boo."

don't you understand that some of us actually notice the difference between mp3's and cd audio? that difference in quality is exponentially worse now that it's confirmed these are unmastered and roughly mixed. it doesn't take a psychology expert to know that your first impression is often the most lasting one. even after you buy the cd the songs may never hit you the right way cos you heard them 5-10 times sounding very flat and dry instead of the RICH audio they intended. plus there's definitely something to be said about 1) having the "real thing" in front of you, ie: full packaging w/ artwork and such, and 2) listening to the whole thing IN ORDER, all at once. i know most of you listened to these songs out of order and/or out of context of the full album, which is really ruining it for yourselves. my two fucking cents.

not to be "bitchy" or anything, but i rarely find the first impression to be the lasting one.
if that were true, i would hate aphex twin, and, well, radiohead as well.
also, my first impression of these songs was from the live versions, which hasn't colored my opinion of them at all. i'll take this for what it is: an interesting insight into the recording process. it makes the wait til june harder because the songs will sound better than they do, and they already sound amazing.

i'm really happy that "i will" got a studio version. if you don't know "like spinning plates" is apparently a mangled backwards version of i will. if you play both songs at once you can see some of the same steps in the progression.
I can see what people are talking about with the first impression thing. The Amnesiac version of I Might Be Wrong was vastly different than the version i heard that was live, it was softspoken instead of aggressive. but i kind of like that, it plays with your head. sure i felt kind of like i was being condemned, but it's one of those things you can point at yourself and laugh at.
i don't know how some of you purists survived the 80's and cassette tapes. haha

i heard the songs of lp5 and lp6 (and "how to.." and "motion.." on lp4, but not the others (on purpose)) live first as well cos the gap between tour and album were just too long in-between tours. but these are the actual studio versions, so if your brain is thinking, this is the album then it just might sound like that in your head forever. but as i said, only some people have their first impression being the lasting one.

I bet the finished album won't be as good.
I'm not big on Radiohead but this leaked material, I like. Maybe it's because it's rawer than their usual finished product? I dunno.
There's something to be said for not over-producing... when talented musicians get together and make music, you can sand off a lot of the interesting bits if you keep grinding away at the mix until it's "perfect".

well whatever
obviously if anyone spent forever tweaking songs youd lose sight of what it originally was. and i seriously doubt radiohead, seeing as theyve been working on music for quite sometime, would overdo it. they didnt nearly spend as much time recording as they did during kid a/amnesiac either.
as much as i like the songs, id also like an album with continuation. just not start-stop tracks. i also like kid a and whatever, so to me its *not* overproducing. it sounds absoutely fine.
though, this is just me. so yeh. stuff and things.
