You just missed the gosh darned point, by golly - that music
is free. Intellectual property in general is free. It no
longer has any monetary value.

unlike being a call center drone, which is worth
$12/hour...what if aphex has to work in a call center like
me!! how will i sleep at night if his life sucks as bad as
mine! he ei so talented!

i find it fucking selfish of people to think they should be
able to make a living off of art.

if rdj worked in a call center i bet we might actually be
hearing a lot of those super secret amazing awesome mind
blowing tracks he keeps claiming he has tucked away
somewhere because he wouldnt be so fucking obsessed with
people ripping him off.

i was just kidding though, i think nobody should have to
worry about "making a living" and i don't stay up at night
worrying about these artist ninnies any more than i worry
about anybody else whose life is wasted in this bullshit
world

antagonism rather than the fact that i just fucking love the
word.

lets get introduced to the concept of theft of services vs
theft of goods. it is still a form of theft, like plugging
into the neighbors cable or getting on their wi-fi. the
fact that its not a physical item is irrelevant. scalping
tickets is illegal, insider trading is illegal, all sorts of
things people can do but society has deemed
unlawful because they take advantage of the system and
negatively impact others.

intellectual property can have value because the law says it
does; the people say it does. i'm not saying that i don't
think some degree of file sharing is ethical and reasonable
to a certain point, but the mass distribution of entire
albums with no intention to ever purchase is criminal and
that is how black and white that is. sorry to ruffle
feathers, but lets crack this enchanted illusion of
justification we have here and at least be honest and say
that a lot of people just don't give a shit.

too

That is some very nice self righteous language, but it
doesn't change the fact that what was once scarce is now in
such ridiculous oversupply that it's a chore to sift through
it.

this thread really delivers.

i never said anything about artists shouldnt be paid for
their work, or shouldnt be able to make a living from their
work.

my comparison was to some artists making millions of dollars
for such bs (campitalism/consumerism/advertising, instead of
their actual output/creation)...vs people who do things to
push community forward (civil engineering, product design
for real-world issue solving), etc.

i think they should all be paid, but sometimes the massive
fluctuations between rich and poor artists is quite
mindblowing, innit?

Exactly! Starvation might even enhance desirable traits in
an artist, just as it brings out the cheekbones on a comely
wench or the noble anatomy of a pedigreed dog.

have you not seen the seventeen posts i've made where i
suggest supporting the artist as supplement?

yeah i don't do it often because i frankly can't afford it
(i can barely make rent), but in that case it's not like i
would have been buying the cds if they weren't freely
available anyway.

i read through that article, and i agree on some points.
people should still buy music if they like it after
downloading it, and not expect an artist to live off
keychain sales. i've never put my time, heart and soul into
a keychain. plus how many of us are into band merch? i
don't think i even have a shirt with a band logo anymore.

yea the riaa sucks, but we don't listen to music on major
labels mostly. in the cases of most artists i really like,
i generally want to support the labels they are on as well
as the artist.

anyway, there is no reason to put it all off on the failure
of the industry to properly adapt. when i got most of my
music by buying cds, i only usually ever bought a couple per
month. i think most people can afford that so, if they
download 50 and think 1 is the best, just buy that 1. then
people continue to support the artists and labels we like
and it maintains the need for competition, because the best
artists are the ones who still get sales.

Having an anti-piracy debate is the same as having an
